Sony has just come on stage at MWC to show off what they have in store for the rest of 2012. After announcing that the Xperia S will be available this week in Barcelona (and we hope the rest of Europe) Sony have gone on to announce the Xperia P and Xperia U, all falling into its NXT line. The 3 devices share features that Sony is keen to elaborate on – firstly all upcoming phones will be PlayStation certified. The three devices will share a cohesive and minimalist (and very pretty) hardware design philosophy and they will also feature a revamped Android skin. Also included across all three devices will be dual core CPUs and access to the Sony Entertainment Network

Now onto the specifics of the devices - We already know quite a lot about the Xperia S, a 4.3 inch phone with a 720p resolution. The Xperia P is the next rung down, with a 4 inch “White Magic” screen that should excel in sunlight (which I assume just means can get very bright). We’re still unsure of the resolution of the P’s screen. Finally we have the Xperia U, which features a 1 GHz Dual Core in a 3.5 inch body – impressive if it’s not too lowly specced in the resolution department, too.

Otherwise, Sony also made mention of other new technologies, such as the SmartDock which hooks your phone up to the TV Atrix-style, and SmartTags, which seems to use NFC tags to launch apps, etc. as Paul has talked about in a recent article.

A final little interesting titbit is the transparent strip along the bottom of all three devices – it’s a notification light, that also doubles as an ambient colour light–strip-thing, like some Panasonic TV’s used to feature.

Both the Xperia U and Xperia P will see releases in Q2 of this year. The Xperia S should be out very soon.

Just so you can distinguish them, the lego-brick'd Xperia U is on the left, and the much saner looking Xperia P is on the right.
