The source code extravaganza!

It looks like ICS is finally upon us, well, in a few places, maybe. For everyone else though, there's still the chance that the modding community will bring fancy new custom ROMs to the devices that aren't getting a vendor-blessed injection of Android 4.0. While there have been smatterings of activity (with varying degrees of success) since the release of code to AOSP, one of the big catalysts is the release of sources direct from the vendors. The source code allows a higher degree of compatibility and customisation than you would get with binaries pulled from the devices pre-compiled. Kernel source code is particularly instrumental in this and also allows the development of tweaks like overclocking.

To comply with the licensing surrounding Android, sources are now being released for several handsets.

  • Samsung has released the Galaxy S II source code in full, for all developers to have an easy route to creating custom ROMs. You can get it here: Opensource.samsung

  • HTC has launched the ICS Kernel source for the Sensation and the Sensation XE.Let's hope the UK drop is close. Get it here: HTCdev

  • It's not for ICS, but Sony has released the full source for the Xperia S. Paul has his review coming up soon, so make sure to check it out. Get it here: developer.sonymobile

So, it's up to you, devs. Get to work! ;)
