Predictably the G300 is SIM locked.

Disappointing... But expected I suppose.

Huawei phones thus far have been cheaply and easily unlocked Let's hope this is the same.

DC-Unlockers seem to have quite a bit of experience with unlocking Huawei phones so I wouldn't be surprised to see a solution from them very soon.

here's a suggestion:

Download and install dc-unlocker
Download and install PSAS 
Put in different network SIM into the modem, turn it on and connect to to the PC via USB
Run DC Unlocker as Administrator, then scan and make sure you can see the device. It will say locked at the bottom next to SIM status.
Run PSAS v1.15 as Administrator
In PSAS click Hardware Forensics tab, choose "Use Mobile ports"
You will be taken to the Setup tab. Set Serial Com Port to COM# - \Device\QCUSB_COM#_1 and Baud rate to 115200 (decrease it to 9600 if PSAS crashes)
Now go to PSAS DIAG tab, press the Send button and make sure that text is returned in the white box below.
Change Save Memory To File to Read EFS, change Max Page to 5000 and click Alternate Method
Click lets go. Save the file to the desktop, and once PSAS is done open it in Notepad.

I have no issue in hunting through the above file produced, if someone wants to follow these steps, to see if we can grab the unlock code via the diagnostics port.

Somebody here said that they got an unlock code from vodafone over the phone free of charge. Anyone can confirm this?

I think it is fairly likely it will say EFS read not supported.

Is anyone gonna try one of these tools to see if the methods used for the ZTE devices works with this device?... I haven't got a G300 yet, but very well tempt me if there is a method of unlocking without paying Vodaphone or any other unlocking services (just like Frankish, I'm a cheapskate )... I'm guessing we're gonnahave to wait for Huawei to release the original stock rom to help this method work properly?!... Look forward to seeing some progress in the next month or so

Hi All.

I purchased my new Huawei Ascend G300 only yesterday and applied for a unlock code as I am on the 3 network.

I received my unlock code this morning via email and now I have an unlocked handset.

The code cost me around £16 from the address below.

No messing - it just works.
