[Screen Problem] Backlight wont go off.

Screen works fine, touchscreen works fine but when I press power off to lock the phone and blank the screen, after 2 seconds the screen lights up again displaying my lock screen. Press power again, the screen darkens and again, 2 seconds later its lit up again but still locked...etc.... ad infinitum... This obviously means the screen is permanantly on in my pocket so the battery is going to get rinsed, so I have the phone brightness on minimum, which means I cant see it when I take it out....

Only just started doing this today, have installed no new apps, virus checked, had the same ROM for months.... Any ideas as to what it could be? Obviously rebooted and what not and am preparing a wipe. What do I NOT NEED TO WIPE to ensure my apps will still be there? I'll try that and see if it helps but am not confident.
