Touch screen seems to work but it looks pretty badly smashed. What's my best option? I notice replacement digitisers but the actual touch thing seems to be working, can I just get a replacement front cover? Or should I bring it to one of those places that repair it?

I'm looking at the replacement tutorial and I don't think I have a screwdriver that small.

buy a small screwdriver (can be got for peanuts pretty much anywhere - market, eBay etc etc)
buy a refurbished/used front cover from ebay for about £9.

then if you need a tutaorial, PM me and I'll knock one up.  It's very very easy though:-
back off, remove battery, SIM and SD card.
remove all 8 screws
run thumbnail along in the join between silver side strip and front cover to 'pop' it loose
etc
etc
etc
