That's definitely it. I deleted the old backups through the recovery menu, rebooted, and now I have 9.6GB available.
I don't know why I couldn't browse to the backup files using file explorer, but at least I have got to the bottom of my first issue.

As to why I couldn't restore from the most recent backup I don't know.

Just noticed, the kitchen mentions the Galaxy Nexus radio/baseband and the info in the OP mentions the old radio (not .48)

backup files are now in root/mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod (CWM says its more secure), which makes transferring them off the phone a bugger unless you pay for CWM premium. Does anyone know an easier way than moving them to the storage folder (which needs space), or "wifitransfer, (which takes ages and then has to be unzipped). At least on the N7 you can copy it straight to thumb drive...

also, i've noticed i now have lots of "shortcut folders" in my file system to the new emulated storage folders since 4.2.2. Is it possible that these are being seen as false duplicates and  messing up the amount of free space the system sees?
I had a problem with my N7 where the system thought i had no space when i had loads, and was giving me "not enought storage" errors. this also stopped TB from making backups, and CWM from restoring an old one. i ended up pulling everything off the internal storage and formatting.

Are these updates part of Jr9?

I've just made a small update to the kitchen - this fixes a FC issue with Play Store services and also adds the Ovivo Mobile APN.

Would anyone be interested in a kitchen option to fix AdBlock again for 4.2.2? This is technically a security hole, but i've had at least one request.

I got a strange Play Store error after flashing Jr9 (Error 920). I tried clearing cache / dalvik cache / Play Store data but it didn't fix it..

Had to flash the rom again to fix the problem, baked me a fresh one to avoid the same issue again.. lol

Looks like apps like Adfree & AdAway have been removed from Play Store. Can't find any of them anymore.

I use the LBE security suite, it has antivirus,firewall and other cool features Including AD BLOCK.
Its modular so you can chose to enable or disable functions.
Never had to use adblock since I switched to LBE.
