Sounds like you don't have the drivers installed properly.

Are you installing clockworkmod or rooting? If clockworkmod use my recovery.
If rooting, was you're rom 2.3.5 or 2.3.4? Did you try to flash super boot?

Google USB drivers, not ZTE's handset driver. Very different things.
