Backing up bust phone for new one, touch screen not working.

Basically it looks like my device isn't interacting with the PC Suite. I think it's stuck in mass media mode, though at the same time I can't even see any files.

Is there any way to recover it? Like to force it into that mode, or maybe to root it so I get into recovery mode?

It says "Android SIngle Sooner ADB device" was successfully installed if I hold down the volume button while booting up, then connect it. Does this give me a back door? What do I do?

Note that the recovery menu works just fine and I can apply an update from the sdcard. Is there any way to use this to my advantage?
