I used this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree . What it does is use the proximity sensor to determine whether the phone is in pocket, it locks the phone then when you take it out it automatically wakes the device. Your experience may be different of course but it was too big a drawback for me personally. The NFC method doesn't drain the battery at all and also (surprisingly, now I think about it) works in airplane mode as well. I have had to swap to my old slip case mind you because the flip case was too thick to work with the tags. I've put a sticky tag on the front of it and it works a treat with no downsides.
