It's a pretty cumbersome process, as Windows Media Encoder does not allow you to process files in batches.

However, this clever man has come up with a lovely solution. The conversion process takes a while once you've set up the program correctly (see the website), but it does work a treat :>

Actually the PLUS MP3 Audio Converter LE which is downloadable from MS as part of the WMP bonus pack (not WMP 9) does this job very nicely in batches

Ah - I was aware of that, but does it only run on XP? I'm using Win 98.

Tried the MP3 Audio Converter LE on the Bonus Pack for WMP 7.1
This actually does not manage to convert some of the mp3 files that the other method i posted above can't handle.

So, although it's a neater solution, it isn't as powerful.

I just use the copy to device function on media player 8 (XP again). It doesn't report how much space is available on the SD card (SPV is not a supported device) but has no problems copying to it.

doyou know of any method to perform similar tasks to video files? Is there any free software available for this?

Could always just use Winamp (www.winamp.com) and set the Output to be WMA? Queue up a load of MP3s, make sure repeat isn't on, then click play and woosh, you're away...

I have been looking for a program like this i have 934 songs on my comp and they are all at 128kbps i am goin to bring them down to 96 or 64 what do u suggest i wanna maintain the gd quality it takes up 5 gb on my comp.

Try 56Kb stereo conversion using Media Encoder 7.01
The quality is very acceptable but the size is 20% of the original MP3 :!:  

Now I have 5 full albums + 10 Music videos + LOTR FellowShip on my 128 SD and still some 15Mb free.

I suggest you keep them in at least 128 format, unless you have a pair of crappy 1inch speakers connected to your PC.. I have about 12-14GB of music on mine. If you need space, archive some of it on CDs, but personally I would only convert them to less than 128 for the phone.. Though I'm getting my 256MB SD soon and am looking fwd to forgetting all my conversion problems.

For SPV I used 72K stream and it turned out ok for SPV headphones.

I personally prefer music in 192K and 256K mp3's - you can definitely hear the quality difference even if you are musically deaf, like I am

thanks 14 gb is a lot of music but i am mainly also doing it because i wanna fit more songs on my spv

I just convert tracks as I need them to 64kbps wma for the SPV. Remember that converting from mp3 to wma loses some quality in the conversion because the mp3 is converted to a wav file first, then to wma. That's one thing I like about Ogg Vorbis - it supports bitrate shedding Just a pity no one uses it much!

Dave how big is one of ure songs roughly cause i am using mp3 not wav it still works but is it a bigger fie can u give me the web site so i can download that program thanls
