SYMPTOM:
You can set a time delay so that your phone checks the e-mail every so often... This can be found in the "E-mail Settings" section. Once set it does not check for e-mail if the phone is restarted.
RESOLUTION:
This can be solved by doing a "manual e-mail check" after restarting the phone. The periodic e-mail checking facillity appears to work from then on.
