IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a chat room service. There are hundreds of networks each with thousands of channels, or chat rooms.

For SmartPhone i have chosen the xnet network, and the channel "#smartphone", the # denotes it being a channel.

I suggest you read the entire guide, even if the link below works to allow you to get a larger understanding on IRC.

Getting Started

To get onto IRC you need a 3rd party client. The windows client of choice is mIRC, click to visit the site and download the latest version.

Install and run it, you will be presented with an options dialogue box similar to the one below:

mircoptions.jpg

Fill out the Name and Email fields with fake data, for the sake of privacy.

In the Nickname field put your forum ID (eg Monolithix).

In the Alternative field put a similar nick in (eg Monolithix^ or Monolithix_), if there is already a user on the network with your nickname you will automatically revert to this.

Click ok.

You should then be able to click the following link, and it will connect you to the server and join the channel for you.

irc.monolithix.org #smartphone

You will be presented with the following screen:

mirclink.jpg

Click OK and you will automatically connect to the server and join the #smartphone channel.

If the link does not work, do as follows.

You will have a white screen with a text bar at the bottom, similar to the screen below:

mircwindow.jpg

Type "/server irc.monolithix.org", without the quotes, as show and hit enter. You will then see a stream of text as mIRC connects to the server.

To join the #smartphone channel, type "/join #smartphone". Your screen will then change to something similar to this:

mircchan.jpg

Anything you then type into the bottom text bar will be sent to the room when you hit enter.

When you are finished type "/quit", and close mIRC.

Any questions?

Thanks, Mono, just had a quick read on the phone, and I'll have a more thorough look when I get back to my PC.

Couple of things, though.

(1) is it possible to access from the phone (sounds unlikely, but thought I'd ask)?

(2) any way to get to it from a HPC, eg Jornada?

Thanks again, Pete.

David: ta.

Pete:

1: Nope, no IRC client for SmartPhone yet (mores the pity)

2: There's probably a good few knocking about for your Jornada, try the mobile sections of http://download.com.com or www.tucows.com for free distro's. Just search them for "IRC client".

I have timestamps now..

All you do is: press 'alt'+ 'o'

then press messages in the IRC part

and then you mark "Timestamps events, format"

Voila.. now you'll see timestamps on any new thing writen
