What do you do when you can't sleep?

Once again I've not been able to sleep at all.

Does anybody know any clever ways to get to sleep, or good ways to entertain yourself?...

...Or will I be spending another night watching the sun rise accompanied by old episodes of Bottom and Futurama?

You too?

Christ! It sure does get boring at 3am in the morning with nothing to do. Thak God for Channel 4 being nice enough to show things during the night as well.

Usually though I spend my time surfing the bizarre underbelly of the web (That is places that don't even have names, just IP addresses).

Unfortunately, since BT killed my broadband, I've had little net time to enjoy and got myself wound up in a book (Or rather books now). Its just a little disturbing to realise, since Monday I reckon I've had about 6hrs sleep, tops. And this is a good week!

The only way I've found to be able to sleep is read some of the 'fun' literature I have for my job, such as the IEE Wiring Regulations. KNocks me out for maybe 2hrs or so.

Just glad I don't end up like that guy in Die Another Day, wearing weird fibre optic clad face masks to prevent madness from insomnia. :)

Generally though, your stuck with it, unless you want to get hooked on drugs, which is a bad thing...

I know what helps me, but this is a family site as I'm sure the mods would remind me if I went into too much detail.

My number 1 is along the lines Martin@Home is thinking...

However, given that i'm currently on my own, i tend to program until i drop. Yeash, how sad am i?!

JabbaTheSlut: my sister worked at the Electrolux call centre, said it was great fun telling people what to do with their vacuum tubes. Hey, Pro, u might want to try that one out too!

What about warm milk? Natural relaxant...

I dont' sleep during the day at all, unlike my housemates! If you're looking for a job why not try Powergen, they recruit through an agency on Kings Street (will find out who), lot's of fun on the phones asking people why they've not paid their phone bills. A couple of my friends do it - they seem fairly happy with it (mind you, that may be down the to abundence of attractive female students there).

Tried it. Still awake.

I'm a student, I never seem to have milk in the fridge (unless it's turning to cheese)!

Get incredibly stoned and pass out usually works for me

Think I'll have to have words with the guy down the road if this sleeplessness continues.

Thank you all for the advice, I shall try and put some of it into action next time. The worst thing last night was that MoDaCo went down at about 3am, so I couldn't even post random messages for a few hours!

Sorry I'll be a bit more constructive now, a few things that might aid sleeping (naturally without the aid of smoking). Hot bath or shower, I tend to go for a bath, once you have raised your body temparture it is easier for you to goto sleep. Ever had the feeling of sleepiness after a big Sunday roast? That's partly why, because food tends to increase body temprature, especially large meals.

Ever thought about Tai Chi, very relaxing and the meditation part can help calm minds and induce sleepy state. Got anything you are stressing about at the moment, there is usually a root to most problems.

All sounds a bit obvious but when you are a student it is easy for your lifestyle to throw your body internals completely out of whack. Diet and simple things tlike that should be addressed/considered. Has taken me a good few years to get my body to a comfortable state after being a student for 7 years.

Think it's just all the stress trying to find a work placement for next year, coupled with where am I going to be living.

ANYBODY WANT TO GIVE A PRODUCT DESIGN STUDENT A JOB?!

I was going to give the bath idea a go, but we've not had hot water for the last couple of weeks, the plumber should be here today though!

Once again, thank you everyone!

Re: food and sleepiness - it usually happens coz blood is directed at your stomack to digest, so is most oxygen/energy/resource. And the temperature as well.

Try breathing in>out>don't inhale untill you want to>exhale>don't inhale .untill....>exhale - eventually this will stop hyperventilation and reduce ampount of oxygen to brain, thus making you sleepy.

To get things off your mind, concentrate on breathing - one of the most common means of meditation...

Or the usual, but in fact it makes it harder to sleep:

9-delta-tetra-hydro-can***nol :)

Have just woken up (11am)

Not too bad last night, got to sleep around 2ish (I think).

Used hot choc and deep breathing techniques.

My plan is to get back into a normal sleeping habit by the end of the week.

Right - off for a shower.
