Transcoding Proxies == Cheaper GPRS!

All,

I've been developing something called a transcoding proxy for wireless 802.11 devices for a while now, and since the project is nearing "proof of concept" completion I've had a thought, why not use the same idea for smartphones?

Basically a transcoding proxy works by translating web objects, images, etc. into more readable forms by the device that is requesting it.

As an example I've posted a photo album, the one showing how the current smartphone works - by downloading the entire image and resizing it to fit the screen, and the other fetched through the proxy - smaller images == cheaper gprs, downloaded in a fraction of the time, and (optionally) easy 1 page view.

By my estimates the proxy version would cost 4.3p to download, compared with £1.35 for the non proxy version, and an age to download (based on £3 per Mb).

Ok, so this is an extreme example, but it shows you what's possible with this technology.

Now I'd like to know if this is of any use to you? or is there something out there i've missed that already exists? and would you pay a nominal fee to use the service? if only to cover hosting costs.

It still needs a lot of development time, which I don't immediately have, but if enough interest is shown I'm sure I can shift it to the top of the pile :)

Mark.

Sounds interesting - I have used a similar service previously on a old Palm PDA, and it did speed things up.

I don't know if anyone is currently offering a similar service for Smartphone, but I think that it is niche that needs filling!

I would be prepared to pay a small ammount for such a service, after all it will reduce my GPRS useage.

Yeah, me too, i used to use a proxy on Palm, and it's clever and faster.

Set it up on a home pc, let us hammer the pc for a while, and if it's good, they will come!

Set up bandwidth limits prepaid, and you won't risk any outlay eitehr.

Cheers guys, that's great.

Once I'm happy with the build i'll stick it somewhere online so we can all try it out, then if that's successful I'll look at adding some smarter techniques for the smartphone :)

btw: see if you can build in a html to wap converter!

i've got free open access, and found wap useful - there's a few cheap otions around, but i think parsing html > wap isn't that tuff, but mark_g_james

only if you can be bothered mate..
