AT&T Recall?

My friend owns a Mpx200 from AT&T. They recently contacted him to inform him they will be recalling all of the mpx200's that are in the field because they require a "hardware update" to fix a problem. They have arranged for him to have an "updated" unit sent to his house and he will be sending the old one back to AT&T. Any idea what this is about? Anyone?

I'll have more as it happens.

Ok.. the rep told him to expect a package within the next few business days. It will contain his new phone. He needs to put his sim card in it (duh) and return the old phone. When he again asked why they were doing this, the exact statement was "The Manufacturer has ordered that we replace certain batches of phones..."

???????

All I know is that if he grows a limb out of his neck near where the antenna of the phone is located, I'm damn sure never buying a Mpx200.. :-)

Is there anything new on this? This is the only place that I have heard anything about this. I talked to an ATT person today and they had heard nothing about this at their store (not surprised).

There is no current recall on the MPx200 from AT&T. We called today to get an estimate on the replacement time and the reason why. The rep we spoke to told us that there is no current "Recall" campaign, and that a new unit would -NOT- be shipping.

We inquired about what we were led to believe was a recall. And the answer was as follows:

"AT&T is not currently running any hardware upgrades to the MPx200. The only possible reason they would ask you to ship your phone back would be when the Smartphone 2003 operating system becomes an option for these phones. When AT&T starts offering that as an upgrade they will gladly ship you a replacement phone with the new O/S on it."

The rep would not go into any further detail as to the cost of this "upgrade" or release date.

I apologize for the confusion in reguards to the recall, but we've got some interesting news as a result anyway.
