MMS on US MPx200 theory/idea. Looking for input.

Recommended Posts

I have a US version of the MPx200 running on AT&T's service, and thus have no MMS capabilities. Old news I know.

I don't know how the UK version impliments MMS, but I was curious as to anyone's speculation if it would be possible to copy the app, if it is a app, out of the UK version and install it in the US version?

Just a theory here, may be completely bogus, but doesn't hurt to ask right?

Thanks for reading.

I also asked this question as well as sending emails to the makers of SmartMMS, jmms, AT&T, and Motorola.

The only one that responded was motorola with a number to call at Microsoft.

If you find anything, let me know.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was just looking through the registry on my MPx200 and found a entry that was for the SMS portion.

Under the "Broadcast" key, there is a String of "AppName" with a value of "Windowstmail.exe"

Makes me wonder if the MMS client on the European MPx200 could be found this way?

The values I found are in the registry as fallows.

Hi guys,

The reason you haven't been getting a great deal of response on this issue is that up until now, nobody in the UK could run unsigned applications, and as such the registry editor was not available.

Anyway, the registry entries you mention are the same for the UK version. i.e. AppName is windowstmail.exe. As with all the standard SMS settings under that location.

The UK version of the MPx200 MMS is implemented using the Jataayu jMMS package. Installation modifies a number of registry entries as follows :

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2F930BF0-6FE9-4a53-9E17-88E9247BAB48}]

@="jMMS Plugin"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2F930BF0-6FE9-4a53-9E17-88E9247BAB48}InprocServer32]

@="IPSMWindowsjMMSplug.dll"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInboxMsgTypesIPM]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInboxMsgTypesIPMMMS]

"DLL"="IPSMWindowsjMMSInbox.dll"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInboxMsgTypesIPMNote]

"DLL"="IPSMWindowsjMMSInbox.dll"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInboxMsgTypesIPMSMStext]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInboxMsgTypesIPMSMStextMsg]

"DLL"="IPSMWindowsjMMSInbox.dll"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESecurityPushRouterRegistrationsByGenericId00DF70424B3C301]

"Trust"=dword:00000002

"RefCount"=dword:00000001

"Params"="/run"

"Path"="IPSMwindowsMMSReceive.exe"

"AppId"=""

"ContentTypes"="application/vnd.wap.mms-message"

"GenId"="000DF70424B3C301"

The primary DLL being the jMMSInbox.dll. There are others that are imported during application runtime, but there are no registry references to them. I do have the jMMS package installation binaries here, and if legal, will post them for you to try. However, with not knowing the legality of this action, and not wanting to get banned from this site, I am not prepared to distribute at this time.

If someone can confirm whether this would be ok to post, I'll certainly upload it.

Alphaflux.

See below the entire release document for the Jataayu jMMS package. As you can see its a test version and there is absolutely no mention of copyright anywhere in the document.

Thanks for the informative reply AlphaFlux.

It's nice to know what app is being used for the European implimentation.

I also fully understand your reservations about posting the client.

I wouldn't want to get band over anything either.

Hopefully, something will work out so that we American's can give it a try.

Which moderator should I contact with the question?

I'm new here, so I'm not familiar with which moderator's frequent which parts of the forum.

Don't want to bark up the wrong tree so to speak. :wink:

Don't get me wrong here, becuase I wouldn't want anyone to do anything that 1, could risk thier membership here, and 2, possibly be seen or interpreted as a illegal act.

But you would think, that a program that was given' away with the purchase of a hardware product, it wouldn't matter much if it was used on the same product that just happend' to not come with it.

Unfortuanatly, those damn copyright's can be tricky when it comes to things like this.

At the same time, like AlphaFlux said, the copy he has doesn't appear to have any obvious copyright associated with it at all. :|

Oh, real quick Sophist, the software package you have, since you are in Hong Kong, I'm guessing the software was meant to be used in Hong Kong, what language is it written in? Or should I say, what language does it display when you use the program?

Hong Kong version (in English!) is the same as that referred to by Alphaflux in his post. Have had a look at it and it does in fact come with an End User License Agreement.

I've not seen anything to suggest that it would be ok to post yet I am afraid.

I guess it's because the moderators are unsure too and would not like to comment for fear of the repercussions if it does turn out to be a problem. Maybe it would be a good idea to send a PM to Paul [MVP] and see what he says.

I sent an e-mail to Jataayu the other day.

Basically, I said that I had learned that their software was being used on the European version of the MPx200 and that I'd heard of some people saying they had a version, but didn't want to break any laws by putting it on the internet.

And I also asked if they new when the software would be made available for said purpose.

Their reply was that the choice to ship the software on the MPx200 was up to Motorola, and any further inquiries should be addressed to them.

The person that replied to me didn't even respond to the statement about putting the software on the internet.

I'm not sure if that is good or bad. :?

I have also recently learned that the generic firmware for the MPx200 has the MMS client built into it.

Makes me wonder if Jataayu is mistaken' and maybe it is actually ATTWS fault that we US users don't any MMS. :x

I am so temped to install the generic build, but don't want to screw my phone either. :lol: :roll:

I don't think it would be right to put it up for download, whilst there is no copyright etc directive in the file displayed it may well be elsewhere, there is no GPL licence etc , and I think if people don't mind you doing distributing code or binaries they tend to state it very clearly.

The people who wrote the app are just trying to earn a living; its up to them to decide if they want to give it away.

I guess Orange etc licenced versions for the MPx as did other operators ( ? ), maybe motorola has left it up to operators to decide wether they want this ? Does your operator definately support MMS ? If they don't have the infrastructure then they wouldn't ship the app with their phone.

Here's a link to the technical specifications:-

http://www.jataayusoft.com/web/DcMMSC.htm

and this

Jataayu Software Inc.

E-mail: [email protected]

is the contact details for the states.

If MMS is supported on your/the networks then why not find out how many people want it (do a poll or something) and then you might get a cheaper per unit cost (maybe who knows) than if you each purchase individually (assuming they do individual purchases).

They also have an office in the UK so you could always try to contact them with regards to distribution, purchase, information etc......

I say post it. It was AT&T's decision (not Moto's) to not include the MMS software with the MPx200 and the company who makes the MMS software for the MPx200 doesn't make it available for sale to individuals. :x

If somebody has it but is afraid of posting it here in fear of breaking rules/being banned, why not post it in a newsgroup (Usenet) or through one of the P2P file sharing networks?

Just my opinion on the matter.

Hey all, go check out www.mpx200.com

On that page is the file/program to re flash the ROM on your MPX200 to the original factory Motorola build. With it MMS is enabled along with a built in image viewer program and camera program which should work with any future compatible cameras. This flash also enables the third 900mhz band on the phone!

I flashed my phones ROM the other day and it is running no problem. I definitely recommend it to anyone.

No, afriad not. The people that released the ROM have specifically requested that links and downloads are not submitted to other boards and solely remain on mpx200.org. Just browse over there ... its not hard to find. :lol:
