thank you craigcrawford,

your method worked great after my win7 x64 attempt failed. I have created the tinycorelinux on a usb-stick with unetbootin. Because of the USB connection I had to modify step 6. to

sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom

sudo mount /dev/sd1 /mnt/cdrom

cd /mnt/cdrom/desire

I have also used a goldcard because of my branded t-mobile DE device and it's working without removing the goldcard or formating it. Thank you very much

Hi all, I tried both the "original" guide, and this (/dev/sd1). However, It doesn't work.

All I get is:

mount: mounting /dev/whatever on /mnt/cdrom failed: No such file or directory

I used the netbootin' utility to transfer files from .iso to usb stick...

Any ideas?

anyone else had problems with booting the cd at computer startup?

If your computer boots up from its hard disk, then you'll have to double-check your BIOS: the optical drive must have precedence over the hard disk in the boot sequence.

Try sdb1. If that doesn't work try going into /dev/ and see what's available.

cd /dev/

ls -d */

Ok, I get the following:

block/ bus/ char/ fd/ input/ net/ pts/ shm/ usb/

None of wich contains the files/folders I'm looking for... :/

Another thing, when I browse the usb drive in Windows, is it supposed to be FAT32?

That bit strikes me as strange.

Might just be me... :)

FAT32 is not a problem. It's pretty strange that you don't have the device in there... I would advise using a CD and see if you can do it that way.

Perhaps your BIOS isn't configuring the USB drive as a HDD. Does your BIOS have USB emulation?

I just realised I said the wrong command. Try this instead:

cd /dev/

ls -d ./*

That should bring up the right directories.

CD won't boot :) Written it wrong?

If not check the Burn speed, Linux should always be burnt the slowest speed you have, to stop any errors in copying.

I had no issues with burning the original r3 TinyCore live CD - might take a look, though...thanks for the advice

Also, when burning anything important (BIOS images, OS images, etc) make sure you enable the data verification option - the slightest error can cause all sorts of mayhem.

Hi Guys,

Just got my Desire from Telstra and im real keen on rooting it and flashing it with a generic rom. Problem is, I am a noob with Android so thats why I've found and decided to use the TinyCore method. I've downloaded and burned the r3 tinycore iso then i saw this guide for r4. Is there much difference between r3 and r4?

And has anyone successfully rooted their phone using this guide? Even better, has anyone with a Telstra-branded Desire rooted with this guide?

I have bootloader 0.75 and rom 1.16. Not sure if i can root this version with the file you've linked.

Any input will be greatly appreciated. =)

Hi,

I have used r3 with the guide in this post.

In step 8, replace "desire" with "root" in the last command "cd ... "

all other steps were the same.

Recovery mode as mention in the guide is not avaiable in the r3, so i used the recovery-windows.bat from r4 (windows), and it worked well.

My desire was of vodafone brand, and had no problems.

Good News: I used this method with a Goldcard and everything went well and no brick...

Bad News: It also upgraded my HBOOT to 0.80, so now I cannot unroot to the original image... :D

Can the author edit the top post to make it clear that the HBOOT 0.80 version of testimage.zip is being used? It would be good to create one version with 0.75 and one with 0.80.

I'm a novice on the Desire front, owned a T-Mobile Pulse previously.

Now I'm reading these things about killing some USB functionality from the Desire when rooting it.

In what sense does this hold for this method? Is there a chance of killing USB functions with this routine?
