Bugger, r27 ext4 now hanging and freezing for me. Going back to standard kernel r26 as I think this one was OK. Yeah, camera hangs on exit but only sometimes. After reboot it works without problem (for a while), until kernel does it's stuff up thing and things start to freeze.

Hi guys!

I have a suggestion for all,and a question for Paul...

Let's start wiith the question for Paul:in the kitchen there are 3+1 kernels(+1 is the stock one),which of them do you suggest us?(for me the most important is to have a very stable phone).

The suggestion for all of you is the following:IF YOU WANT A FASTER PHONE AVOID USING GO LAUNCHER EX...USE LAUNCHER PRO!Go Launcher Ex is too heavy,with this launcher I had a lot of lags,the phone freezed frequently,it took a lot of time to re-load the home icons and the RAM consumption is excessive!I know this launcher is wonderful in everything,but not in the performances!With Launcher Pro our O2X is much more faster than using Go Lunche Ex!

Well, I've just been running GR5 for a few days (coming from FR!) and I must say I'm quite happy! Two things bother me a little though, data connections seem to be more flaky than before with very often gray (instead of graan) network symbols. Not sure if data is really disconnected, but it does look like it. Other thing is that (just as with FR) I cannot set WiFi sleep policy (advanced settings) to something other than always on. When I select any other option it will simply revert back to allways on after reboot or for instance after flight mode. Is it just me or is that just weird?

Anyway, still VERY happy with all Paul has done for thos phone... awesome...

Running GR5 + r27 (ext4 obviously) at the moment. If I want to switch to other r26 ext4 kernel, will flashing the new bake execute / need apps data wipe ?

Thx in advance

I did it the same way without wiping (dalvik cache of course) without any problems.

At first sorry for my english!

I have a problem with the battery. When its close to 20% goes to 0% really fast and shut down, but when I boot it again (without charging) it's at 20% of battery and goes to 0% as usual. Is there any fix of this problem? I tried to use battery calibration but nothing happened.

Thanks

To follow on my peculiar behavior, the last day with GR5 + MCK-r26 ext3 everything runs better than ever. Very smooth, battery life very good and no strange behavior from the device (always stays cool!)

The only question that has to be answered is the memory leak. In the past the device becames laggy after 2-3 days of non stop operation. If this is not an issue, then I think I might have a winner here! (7 months after I bought it!)

Update. The same erratic behavior again, right after full charge. I unplugged it from the charger (100%) and went out. After ~ 1.5 hours I checked again, the devise was hot but the indicator said 100%, Reboot and went to 48%!

As this has happened only with GB (V20L) to me, It seems it is a software problem with the stock release that remains with all stock (V20L) based Roms.

I have to watch all the time the temperature to avoid this from happening.....annoying!

Nothing like your behaviour on my device, everything is working great with r26 ext4 kernel, V20L BB and RIL. Not as fast and smooth like CM7 but with really great batterielife, good signal strength and call-quality. (I'm running it with adw launcher ex and minfreemanager on aggressive).

I've got some strange behaviour with my phone now i'm on GR5 core + stock.

3G/H reception is good but get a connection timeout in both gmail and market app, even after phone off/on. But browsing with Opera Mobile/std. android browser goes without problem. Even installing apps from market within Opera works, but not in market cause of the timeout. wifi works fine.

GetRIL gives 0725 Italy and a match.

Got 20L official(EU open) smartflash) before going to GR5 so BB (oct 0725) should be fine too?

First of all, thanks Paul and everybody involved in Modaco developpement !

I recently installed a cooked Gr5 version but as far as I am, i noticed 2 "bugs" or strange behaviour ... :

- home button doesn't do anything except "vibrating". I tried what Paul suggested a few post ago, but it didn't solve anything (I didn't cooked with LG Launcher, only stock one, and I'm using LauncherPro)

- Camera shows pictures, but doesn't save them ... The button doesn't do anything :(

Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just a "wait for Gr6" :)

Thanks.

Martin.

It does if you select one of the custom kernels.

I'd suggest avoiding experimental r27 at the moment as it has some freezing issues it seems.

P

Yeah, I'm finding the r27 kernel to be not the most stable thing in the world. It seems to leak memory quite a bit in addition to the (mainly browser) freezes and after a few days with it my phone is doing all sorts of weird stuff.

I think I'll bake one with the stock kernel as a base and then maybe experiment with other ones later. Are you planning on having the kernels separately downloadable again Paul?

Yes, i'm probably also gonna pull the r27 kernel for now...

Hi. I'm on stock V20L via Kitchen. Also having the same problem with the camera. Also, videocam hangs. But, otherwise everything else works fine. I even have pretty good battery life. :unsure:

This must be a camera app bug. I followed the advice given by somebody earlier in this thread - to set the system brightness to max before checking auto. After doing this the camera ui didn't darken anymore, and both camera and videocam worked fine. :)

Went from BB 622 Fr19 to BB 0725 and your new Gr5 with stock kernel (no MCK).

- No issues whatsoever, have to see how long battery lasts yet. With my personal tweaks (too many to count), Fr19 lasts ~3 days on one charge. I've even gone 4 days with data/WiFi/BT disabled. Will report back.

- I'm not seeing any of the issues mentioned here.

- I replaced all of the vanilla Google apps in the ROM with my own 2.3.7_r1 build.

- Camera works fine, even zoom while recording FullHD video.

If anyone's interested, I patched Camera.apk again with the following changes:

- 1080p video (h.264): 24 -> 30 FPS

- 1080p audio bitrate (AAC): 64 kbps -> 128 kbps

- 1080p super fine bitrate: 9528 kbps -> 19056 kbps (even @ 25Mbps was smooth, but no visible quality bonus)

- 1080p fine bitrate: 7038 kbps -> 9528 kbps

- 1080p normal bitrate: 5130 kbps (no change)

- 720p video (h.264): 30 FSP (no change)

- 720p audio bitrate (AAC): 64 kbps -> 128 kbps

- 720P super fine bitrate: 4096 kbps -> 8192 kbps

- 720P fine bitrate: 3072 kbps -> 4096 kbps

- 720P normal bitrate: 2048 kbps (no change)

- Quicktime 3GPP container (*.3gp) changed to ISO MP4 (*.mp4) for all video files

Other resolutions are left on original settings, those seem appropriate. Above numbers were chosen based on visual feedback testing and best perceived quality of the recordings. The lowest (NORMAL) settings is left the same (for people with small SD's, etc), while every next step basically doubles the bitrate. Much better scale/range than stock LG presets. If you have tips for other values, let me know.

Audio bitrate boost has a very noticeable impact on audio quality.

Switch from proprietary crap 3GP to standard ISO MP4 is purely a matter of my preference - no quality/size advantage.

APK is not signed with Paul's platform keys, obviously, so it first needs to be uninstalled, then pushed in. To keep LG Home / Launcher app. menu icon position and "system" status, replace the APK using ADB in recovery mode, then boot.

All of the Camera mods are tested and working perfectly. I modded the previous versions of LG Camera a week after I purchased the phone, so it has about 7 months of testing.

Camera.apk [1.5M]: http://oron.com/jne75xl4evwa

Cheers! Great ROM.

PS: As a senior enterprise UNIX specialist I can tell you that going to all this trouble just for EXT4 is arguable, at best. EXT2/3 has the same real-world performance on this HW (or better, in most cases) and is much easier on the block wear of the FLASH memory. Without special settings and tuning for MTD, EXT4 is doing more harm than good. Just a friendly advice.

Maybe Paul can put this as an option in the Kitchen, with your permission. I'm sure a lot of us here would like this.

Thank you very much for your input.

I would love to have this camera mod on my o2x.

Can you please give some help on the steps?

Or can this become a zip file to be installed with CMRecovery?

Maybe this is a stupid question but how can I bake a package with with selected components only? I mean - I would like to have something a kind of prebake: core package and "theme" package but a bit more general: the idea is to be able to install some additional components if I missed them in the first place. Hmm, not sure if this makes sense in general but this question comes from the fact that I wanted to try MCKr26 and it seems that the only way was to bake whole ROM with it - it would be great if there was a possibility to bake kernel-only update packages - easier to "jump" from one kernel to the other in case something goes bonkers.

If you have a working ADB and e.g. CWM recovery, it's super-easy.

1) Power off, PowerOn button + VolDown button until recovery appears

2) Choose "mounts" in the top-level menu

3) Choose "mount /system"

4) Connect phone via USB to your PC and issue this ADB command:

adb push C:\path\to\my\Camera.apk /system/app/

5) Choose "umount /system"

6) Choose "reboot"

Just install Root Explorer, mount /system/app as R/W and replace your current Camera.apk with the patched one ;)

Ok I did that with ES explorer. Thanks!

(Is there any reason to do this through ADB instead of just copy and replace the old apk ?)

The camera apk, works fine, as expected with one limitation. The zoom, while possible, during the video recording, freezes the application and makes errors in the file.

Anyway I don't need to zoom with the phone, If I want to make a "professional" clip, I have more expensive equipment (HD camcorder and DSLR) :P:D

Zoom, while recording or stand-by, is working fine on my O2X. Are you using r26/27 MCK kernel? I use stock LG version (didn't select any kernel options in the kitchen) and everything is super fast, smooth and no features are missing. No freezes.

If anyone is interested in SMS/MMS app from Android 2.3.7 with my changes, let me know:

- MMS image scaling algorithm changed to use as much of the 300KB limit as possible (up to 1920x1920 resolution, higher JPEG quality range)

- MMS user agent changed to Sony Ericsson W800i (helps with some MMSC's)

- Avg. MMS image size when sending: 13KB (vanilla) -> 250KB (my mod)
