Funny you should mention that, that's how I unlocked a Huawei 3G modem / wifi thingy last year. From my fuzzy memory you extract a portion of the rom and search for a certain hex string. Once you found that right next to it was a bunch of digits that was your unlock code. I think that's how it works on some older Samsung phones as well. The box was open as it was last in shop and the guy said they had been using it to show customers. So either it was unlocked or they unlocked it in the shop, whish I had checked o well.
