Guest agdmwilson Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 What are people using to view the internet on their Smartphone? Wasn't keen to pay$24 for Opera Mobile (cannot use Mini on C500 as far as I am aware). Any good free/cheap browsers.
Guest mini_man Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 no not really. There arent any other alternatives yet for Smartphone.
Guest w411y Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Theres a Firefox for Pocket PC I'm not sure if there is a SmartPhone version
Guest killerost Posted July 7, 2006 Report Posted July 7, 2006 Here is the link for the "Minimo" project on mozilla.org and you can get the latest release of "Minimo", Firefox for WinCE here. Note that the installer and the cab file won't install on smartphone, only pocketpc, but if you download a zip archive and unzip it to your "program files" directory it works. With version 0.16 Minimo is getting really nice, you can download files to a location you select yourself, you've got tabbed browsing and many other things. The nice thing with Minimo is that you can do almost all the things just by using the buttons on your phone. But since it's intended for PocketPC you can use FakeCursor or sphelper as a virtual pointer. I like fakecursor best because it's much simpler, and because sphelper is hopeless to use if you have the trial. Since it's already so close to beeing smartphone compatible maybe we could encourage him to make a smartphone edition? Or maybe a skilled programmer here could help out? You can check out the Minimo forum here
Guest Twilight.Cruiser Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 (edited) I'm unable to install Minimo (V. 0.16) on my O2 XDA Phone (SmartPhone with WM5 running on it). :D Trying to install it via ActiveSync results in a message "Not enough memory" (what is true concerning the phone's internal memory which is about 4,5 MB free memory and Minimo needs about 8,5MB, as far as I know), but I want to install it to my SDCARD, where's more than enough memory space left. So I tried to install the CAB file. This try was successfull refering to the memory problem, but now I was told that "this application would not be intended for running on my device"! :) Anybody knows a solution or workaround? ;) Thanx in advance! Guest Kwen Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 (edited) Twilight.Cruiser: Get Celetask 2.0 and free up memory with the tool or close down programs and unused task/process You may also just reboot it The C500 is the HTC Typhoon, just use Opera Mini http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/opera...udiovox_smt5600 Actualy, you could just have used the Advanced (MIDP 2) download, same files Edited July 18, 2006 by Kwen

If you read my post you can see that you must get the ZIP file!! Not the msi, not the cab!! And extract it to your storage card\program folders\minimo

CeleTask seems to be really nice...! :D ...maybe you've also a good recommendation for a free, but efficient & powerful alarm clock... - maybe with home screen support...? :( The C500 is the HTC Typhoon, just use Opera MiniI'll also try this out! Thought Opera wouldn't be free, but read in another MoDaCo thread that Opera Mini(!) is - and by visiting Opera's websites once again I found that' true! Have downloaded MIDP2 version and will check out next time... If you read my post you can see that you must get the ZIP file!! Not the msi, not the cab!! And so I've also lost sight of your link to the whole Minimo download archive. :) I'll try it out today, I think, but hope that there will be soon 'native' support for smartphones in the next Minimo release...! ;) Edited July 19, 2006 by Twilight.Cruiser
Guest killerost Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 I've found a kick ass pocket internet explorer add-on: The program MultiIE (can be found HERE) adds several advantages to pocket internet explorer, including Tabbed Browsing with loading status, Quick Full Screen, Hardware Buttons, Background Window loading, Pen dragging, Keep backlight on, and 30+ more essential features.. This is the first one I've seen that supports smartphone, but you must have windows mobile 5. One of the things I've missed the most with PIE is the tabbed browsing.

Guest jasnewt Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Looks nice! :) Unfortunately, it's not for free, but I'll check it! I'd leave it well alone if I were you. I installed it on my C600 and it totally screwed it up, to the point where I had to do a hard reset. For the brief time I had it running the Smartphone compatibility was beta at best. The settings screen was laid out with options overlapping each other. A right old mess. Incredible that they have the cheek to charge for this. Fortunately i tried out the trial version first. It would be a great add-on if it worked, but it needs a lot of work before I'd even contemplate trying it again. Jason.
Guest killerost Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 It's really sad that noone has made a good smartphone browser. I really think Opera Smartphone 2003 edition is the best one at the moment. But it's not quite compatible with WM5. Here is a few things you can do to make it more compatible: before you run the program for the first time edit the file \application data\opera\opera.ini, replace all the the places that says \storage\.. to \storage card\.., copy the \application data\opera directory to \storage card\application data\opera, keep the files in \application data\opera too. You don't need all of them, but I'm not sure who you need so I won't give you any tips. You can read about it in the opera forum. At least Opera will now save all it's cache files to the storaga card. But still, Opera for smartphone lacks download support and if only they could have implemented this and a few of the other things from the pocketpc version, it could be a great browser. PocketIE lacks tabbed browsing, which really sucks. You can't even open the different web pages in two different windows. On the plus side, you can download files with it. :) I really think microsoft could have given us a better browser. With the multiie addon you get tabbed browsing, some people have reported this PIE plugin to badword up their phone. My phone also crashed the other day after installing alot of different things.. so I really can't blame this single application. Can you describe in detail what happended with your phone, jasnewt? If we've got the same kinda crash this program may be "trouble". Minimo could also be a good smartphone browser, but for now the program is way to big, uses too much memory and it lacks support for "our" way of entering text. Thunderhawk is another browser for smartphone. But it was even worse than IE, and it seems like the project is kinda buried. Someone claims that opera mini is a OK browser too, but java? I use it on my nokia phone, but on my smartphone we should have better alternatives. ;)

My phone also crashed the other day after installing alot of different things.. so I really can't blame this single application. Can you describe in detail what happended with your phone, jasnewt? If we've got the same kinda crash this program may be "trouble". Before installing Multiie my phone was working perfectly. Hadn't installed anything else for a while. When starting Pocket IE for the first time after installation the extra menu option was present and what looked like the tab bar was at the bottom of the otherwise normal Pocket IE screen Selecting the MultiIE menu option gave a further menu. I went into options first. That screen was very badly laid out, with some text being covered by other objects and options within the screen. When I went out of the screen my phone totally locked up, forcing me to remove the battery in order to reboot. Every time I went into Pocket IE after this, it would lock up the phone after about 30 seconds to a minute, sometimes less. I gave up at this point and tried to uninstall MultiIE. it was then that I noticed the backlight on my phone being strange. It would light up initially, but once it had timed out, pressing the keys as normal failed to turn it back on. Starting up the camera was the only way I could get the light to come back on long enough to check the power management settings. They were exactly as I had set them to be. There seemed no good reason for the backlight not coming back on after timing out. Naturally this makes the phone a bit difficult to use. Changing settings wasn't working and the only option was to hard reset the phone. Can't see how MultIE could screw up the backlight but it was working perfectly before installing it so it must have been that to blame. The end result is that I have purchased Sprite Backup so it won't take me hours to install all my programs and get them set up how I want them if something like this happens again. Only problem is the backup process keeps failing. I am told they just need to send an Orange signed version, so hopefully all will be fine soon. I'll feel more relaxed if I have a backup in case this happens again! Hope the info helps! It would be great if MultiIE worked as the website claims. Maybe it'll be worth trying again when they have worked on it some more. Opera is OK but it does take up some phone storage and with the C600 that is at a premium, so I think I'll struggle on with the standard Pocket IE for now. Jason.
