Guest DeanoSMB Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 I installed GPRS Monitor from the Vario apps CD but the Vario's performance just seems to go to the dogs afterwards - has anyone else noticed this? Fully uninstalling it seems to be virtually impossible too, bar fiddling with the registry. I'm on the verge of a hard reset just to get rid of it.
Guest chrisbpr Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 i've found this too...let me know how you get on with the uninstall. ta
Guest Noo Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 Installing GPRS Monitor was one of the first things I did, so haven't used the Vario much without it. Therefore, haven't got anything to compare the performance to. Would be very interested to hear if removing this does improve the speed...
Guest mkent_barbados Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 to remove it I just file explored to startup and deleted it, and then to the folder and deleted that (had to restart and do it again to get all the files). I don't know about speeding things up but my GPRS works slightly better than before, only resetting 10 times a day instead of 20! #$%*&*$&%@#$%!!!!

Great phone when it`s not running out of memory even without me running a single app
Guest minty1978 Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 don't know what you guys are doing, mine's only needed 1 soft reset, and thats cos i installed something i shouldn't have.... do you swtich yours off overnight, or leave it in standby?

Seems weird that some people have big problems whilst others don't seem to have any, don't just mean in this case. I mean generally. What we need is someone with three Vario's to test side by side, which is a tad unlikely... :)
Guest DeanoSMB Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 I'm starting to wonder about mine I have to say. I did a full hard reset this morning and have installed about 3 apps and I'm having to soft reset all the time. Tonight while powering up it came up with the message "You are low on Program Memory" and asked me to close one of two tasks, both of which were "Phone"!!! This is not what I expected. Dodgy handset or is this normal??
Guest Emad Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 Dodgy handset. The only time I've had a low memory message is when I've run three (!) emulators at once. How much memory is shown free (settings -> memory) after you do a fresh startup of your phone.
Guest DeanoSMB Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 I have roughly 44Mb of program memory available at startup, of which just under 22Mb is already in use. There are 5 default programs in the Windows/Startup folder. Is this normal? Is there any way of increasing it do you know?
Guest Emad Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 I think the max amount of free memory is just over 30mb. How to increase it? Well, load up less programs to start with :) Whats in your startup folder currently?
Guest DancingMatt Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 I've given up using File Explorer on mine, since it seems to be stuck. Whenever I run it it tries to display the Windows folder and the little timer icon just goes round and round and round... So I have no idea what's in my Startup folder - and still no idea why File Explorer is screwed...

I've not had a single problem with mine, and it's not for lack of playing around with it either! Yet some people are having no end of problems. Could it be a single faulty batch or something??
Guest eyecam Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 (edited) Just noticed on the SPB site that 2.4 has full support for WM5 the one I have on my Vario is 2.3, what is everyone else running ? Also just uninstalled SPB and my vario seems much faster, it said it didn't manage to fully uninstall it mind ! Edited December 6, 2005 by eyecam
Guest DancingMatt Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Ah... The SPB GPRS Monitor that came on a CD with my MDA Vario is "Version 2.3.0, Build 646". In Settings... Today... you can set options for the GPRS Monitor today plugin and mine is set by default to refresh every 10 seconds. Made it 20 seconds and it doesn't seem to be any quicker. Might be slowing things down though?

I am starting to wonder if it's a lemon. 10 soft resets a day is about average, usually whenever I try to do anything clever like save an Excel file or browse the web...

Guest Emad Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 And how much free memory do you have after a soft reset? I have all of those except elatepushservice.
Guest DeanoSMB Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 And how much free memory do you have after a soft reset? I have all of those except elatepushservice. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 22mb for programs
Guest DeanoSMB Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Just managed to remove one major memory-eater that I overlooked - BirthdayPPC... about 15MB! Hardly worth it. Have also removed elatepushservice and sddaemon from startup and that helps...
Guest Emad Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Cool, just remember that sddaemon is for the voice dialling software :)
Guest Noo Posted December 10, 2005 Report Posted December 10, 2005 Out of interest, where did you guys, who have had problems with Spb GPRS Monitor, install it to? Installed on your phone or to a Mini-SD? On another thread, Monolithix mentioned he'd had problems with it installed to Mini-SD, but when he reinstalled it to the Main storage on the phone his problems cleared up. I installed it to my phone, not mini-SD, and have never had any problems.... Just a thought.
Guest DancingMatt Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 I installed mine direct to the phone from the CD T-mobile enclosed with my Vario. I don't even have a miniSD card yet. (As per the post above, maybe the software on the CD is an old incompatible version.)
Guest ccsnet Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 (edited) I installed mine direct to the phone from the CD T-mobile enclosed with my Vario. I don't even have a miniSD card yet. (As per the post above, maybe the software on the CD is an old incompatible version.) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>1) SPB have an update on the way that will solve the backlight issue ( although Tmoble hadnt a scooby about what I was talking about ( sigh ) 2) To speed up your Vario do a hard reset - then follow the setup prompts... at the point where it says 'about to install' and counts down - soft reset. Then from the extended ROM install Signed_Wiz_NoGPRSAutoattach.sa.CAB CAB-Customization-Connection-TMUK-Wizard-Aug08.CAB Signed_DiscoButton8.sa.CAB Signed_TMO_CameraDriverPatch.sa.CAB With the optional smart dial cab if you want ( which I didnt )... you'll also need to set up the GPRS manually so check your settings before starting this... also is it worth reminding every one to back up your data first or am I teaching people to suck eggs ( :) ) ( theres bound to be one lol - I missed some my self ) I did this a week or two ago and I know someone else who also tried it... I can defo see the diffrence in speed. Terran PS Even your Tmobile theme will still be there if you want it Edited December 17, 2005 by ccsnet
