The latest on T-Mobile / T-Zones / T-MobileWeb

I've been using T-Zones on my i-mate SP3 for almost two years now with the standard proxy so I can get to the web, personal email, etc... Last week my phone died (trip through the washer and dryer did the trick), and I had to get a replacement. I went with the T-Mobile SDA since it was one of the few phones that runs Windows Mobile. The problem is that I can't connect to the internet any more. I can't get my settings off of the old phone, but I'm sure I'm using the right settings. I've spent the day scouring the net for the right settings, and they're all about the same. If location is of any concert, I'm in Colorado.

Has ANYONE been able to get their SDA to work on the internet without having to pay for the $30 plan? Links, examples, screen shots, or anything you have would be much appreciated! I don't care if I have to flash the SDA with a new ROM, or whatever other option will get this to work.

And yes, I have spent 2 hours on the phone with T-Mobile's tech support... no help, they just want to sell the $30 plan. What I just don't get is why it was so easy with my i-mate and so difficult with the SDA. Seems dum to me.

Well, bulls**t!!

Go here and get Abatis's T-Mobile cabs. Install them from the phone's file manager, set PIE connection to WAP Network, and you're good to go...

You won't notice anything different on your phone after you install the cabs (meaning, no extra programs or menus, etc - thuogh you will have some new settings under connections/GPRS and connections/Proxy), except that you'll now be able to browse the internet. :rolleyes:

Something is working where it wasn't before! I installed all 3 cabs, and now I can "connect," but every time it comes up with a Special Offer message for T-MobileWeb.

It says, "Sign up for T-MobileWeb and receive news, info, email & unlimited mobile search on your T-Mobile phone and much more. Monthly charge of $5.99 will be added to your bill."

It gives me options to Sign up, Cancel, or t-zones Home.

I tried the Sign up link (I can always remove the feature later) but I still can't get to an actual web site. Is there one more setp I'm missing?

I did recently change my T-Mobile online account profile from T-Zones (4.99) to T-MobileWeb ($5.99)

T-MobileWeb is supposed to jsut be t-zones - renamed. I stoll have the $4.99 plan, as I got it before they jacked up the price.

Either way, it should not be doing what's it doing. It sounds like everything is properly configured but T-mobile doesn't have t-mobile web enabled on your account or something.

Let's do this first. Can you post what all is in the folloiwng:

Settings -> Connections -> GPRS

Settings -> Connections -> Proxy

If you have anything more than two entries in GPRS, we're going to delete some. You only need one, but the cabs install two. They are T-Mobile WAP and T-Zones GPRS. If you see any others, delete them.

The Proxy should have an entry called T-Mobile Proxy. Anything else in there can also be deleted, UNLESS you put it there yourself for some other connection (ie WiFi). The HTTP{xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx} and Socks{xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx} are worthless and can be deleted. They get created by activesync.

Then, in PIE, I assume you made the Options -> Connections -> Connect using say "WAP Network" - right? Sounds like you did, or I think you'd get a different error...

Oh, also, I'm not sure how you got 3 cabs. I've only ever seen TWO cabs from Abatis. I'll go look at that link again, maybe he updated something. It used to just be tmotzones.CAB and tmotzone2.CAB.

So perhaps you got the wrong thing?

Here's my setup - currently not working

GPRS Settings

Connects to: The Internet

Access point: wap.voicestream.com

User name:

Password:

Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0

Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

IP address:

(I've also tried with a Primary DNS of 216.155.165.50)

Proxy Settings

Connects from: The Internet

Connects to: WAP Network

Proxy (name:port): 216.155.165.50:8080

Type: HTTP

User name:

Password:

(I've also tried removing the :8080 and changing HTTP to WAP)

My PIE settings are correct. The message I get when I try to browse is "The current connection cannot be used for your request. Please end the current connection and try again."

Did you uncheck the "automatically detect settings" in the PIE connection menu?

I have not seen that error before. It sounds like something is using your GPRS connection or something. Try rebooting, or just cycling flight mode off/on.

Let us know, otherwise your settings all look correct...

I feel a bit stupid - one problem was the fact that I was trying to connect while connected to ActiveSync. The error I listed above is not the real issue (it's because of the way my network is proxied).

I unplugged and tried again, this time it's taking IE a while to fail (which seems positive). The error I get is:

"The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."

I've tried rebooting many times, and in PIE "automatically detect settings" is unchecked. I know I'm getting warm, I'm just missing something.

What about HTTP vs WAP? I've seen some posts that suggest using port 9201/WAP instead of 8080/HTTP (results to follow...)

Ive seen that as well, but for me personally, with the t-mo SDA and the $4.99/mo t-zones, I get full web browsing using HTTP and port 8080.

Did you set those settings yourself, or were they set when you installed the Abatis Cabs? I ask, because every time I've tried to set the settings myself I can't get it to work. Every time I use the cabs, it works no problem.

So, if you haven't already, use the abatis cabs. If you have, then I honestly don't know what to check next.

I'll think on it. Let me know whether or not you used the cab files...

I'm at a loss. I've tried the cab files (both sets, just for grins). I even went so far as to flash my SDA with the i-mate SP5m ROM to get all the T-Mobile junk off the phone. I'm having no luck at all.

I wonder if there's something on T-Mobile's end with the SIM card. My old phone/SIM worked fine with the settings the cab files use. Maybe it's the IMEI number. That too seems specific to T-Mobile.

I'll keep trying, but far more difficult than when I set up my old i-mate SP3.

What about setting up my own proxy server? I seem to be able to connect just fine, PIE just gets stuck on "Locating..."

I've got a spare public IP and server with not much to do. I'll give that a try and report any success or failure.

Okay, forget the proxy idea for now - that will be my last resort. Here's the latest:

• I did a soft reset of my SDA (running the i-mate ROM)
  
• I reinstalled the abatis cabs. At this point, locating was still not working.
  
• I changed the Settings>Connections>Advanced (menu) settings for Internet connection and WAP connection from "Automatic" to "T-Zones GPRS"
  
• In PIE, Connecting, and Locating work. It gets all the way to Opening, and I get this message:
  The page contains errors and cannot be displayed."
  

I've got to be as close as I can get without this working. There must be some setting I can change to get past this last hurdle. I can connect, locate, and darn near open a page.

Any last help is so greatly appreciated.

careful reading that second link. we t.zones users cant use the dedicated modaco proxy. you can only use that if you upgrade to the 29.99 internet plan. just so you know...

It seems that everything started working at the same time that I got the activation text message from T-Mobile. Apparently it takes 48-72 hours for any change to T-Zones/T-MobileWeb to take effect.

I can't believe that this was so involved - my old smartphone was set up and running with these exact settings in about 10 minutes. Nonetheless, thanks for your help!!
