I'm looking for a tiny, free GPS app that will start the GPS receiver before I run Google Maps. Anybody have a suggestion?

Thanks.

Visual GPSce works fine with me to allow Google Maps to get a fix. Had to set the comm port i think on first run.

I tried both VisualGPSce and Holux GPS Viewer. Both did the trick, although I found VisualGPSce a little more to my liking. I also found that once either program gets a fix I can close it and run Google Maps and it will connect.

No need to install any other software.

Open the Camera app and choose GPS Photo mode, allow it to get a satellite lock and then exit the Camera app. Open Google Maps and you should it should center on your location within seconds of you selecting Track Location.

What's the difference in time between opening another app, getting a satellite lock, opening Google Maps and clicking Track My Location, and simply opening Google Maps and hitting Track My Location?

As I understand it, the problems with gps and Google Maps is getting the initial satellite lock within Google Maps on first use, due to an excessively short timeout period. The workaround only needs to be done once in my experience, as on future use of the tracking feature a lock is usually obtained within the limited timeout. I am not suggesting that the gps needs to be kick started before Google Maps everytime. For me Google Maps works fine without any assistance.
