cannot select wma as CUSTOM CONTACT ringtone from SD card

Hi guys, I did the registry hack to be able to select ringtones from the SD card. However, it will only read wav files.

I try to select wma files, and it tells me that "this ringtone is not working properly. You may want to choose a different one to use"

Even though it seems as a suggestion, the phone won't actually allow me to use the file, forcing me to choose another. Like I said, I also have some wav files on the SD card, and the phone accepts those without complaining. It will still allow me to choose wma's from the phone's memory though, but that's exactly what I DON'T want to do.

**this is only happening with the CUSTOM RINGTONES FOR EACH CONTACT. if I go to start >> settings >> Sounds and try to select any of the wma files on my SD card as the default ringtone, it will do it, there's no "ringtone not working properly" crap in there.**

Any ideas?

Custom ringtones cannot be selected from the storage card they

can only be selected from StorageApplication DataSounds

On 2002 phone replace "Storage" with IPSM

actually, yes they can. WHEN YOU EDIT THE REGISTRY. I lifted this from another post, I think it was in the ARTICLES section

-Create A Folder in SD card to Store All The sound files ( Storage Cardwav)

-copy Every Sound files in folder Windows of your Smartphone (.mid .wav .wma)

to Storage Cardwav

-Add new ringtones to Storage Cardwav

Then set Registry ...

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> ControlPanal >> SoundCategories >> Alarm > Values > Directory

to be Storage Cardwav

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> ControlPanal >> SoundCategories >> InCall > Values > Directory

to be Storage Cardwav

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> ControlPanal >> SoundCategories >> Notification > Values > Directory

to be Storage Cardwav

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> ControlPanal >> SoundCategories >> Reminder > Values > Directory

to be Storage Cardwav

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> ControlPanal >> SoundCategories >> Ring > Values > Directory

to be Storage Cardwav

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> ControlPanal >> SoundCategories >> System > Values > Directory

to be Storage Cardwav

(Don't miss,there are 3 s in the String,S&C should be upper case)

Restart your SmartPhone.

(You should wait for a while To make sure that Your SmartPhone is Full Access To SD card before go on.)

Then You can Assign Individual Ring tone to each Contact..

(And If u set complete as above,Setting>Sound still work too!!!)

so, yes, we should be able to select custom ringtones from the SD card. As I said, I'm able to do so, but only with wav files.

will it work if instead of Storage Cardwav, you use Storage CardMy Documents folder?

If you want to make your phone unstable then you can but it is not advisable to do this.

If you are going to post a guide please also mention the problems as well.

Taken from previous post about this subject.

EDIT Warning awarner

One important thing to be careful of though, If you removed the SD card and the phone was to ring and it needs the tone it may well crash.

Worse case senario is the phone may need a Hard Reset to recover.

EDIT Warning By Midnight

This tweak was found over 6 months ago, and was found to be severely flawed, the main flaw being that if you go into sounds after doing this tweak the phone locked up, and it was common for the phone to Hard Reset itself, and was the reason it hasnt been mentioned since.

Oh, and another thing, with the original tweak contacts dont have to be on the SIM card. I had this reset my phone several times in testing.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

This may have become more stable with the Typhoon range but there is still a risk.

hi guys, two things. First, I didn't put up a guide, I simply posted that information because at first awarner said it cannot be done, which is not true. I apologize if people got confused, like you correctly mentioned, it was "Midnight" who first posted it, and actually a lot of people report different results, from very easy setups, to phones having to be hard-reset.

As we both pointed out, this IS a registry hack, which by common sense implies changing some default settings on the phone, rendering it prone to unstability. However, it is my opinion that the same can be told for mostly any plugin that has been created for the smartphone, specially the screen and the alarm plugins. I actually have had more problems with those plugins freezing my phone than with the sounds registry hack.

At least in my case, the phone doesn't freeze up by going into the start >> settings >> sounds menu, however, any person attempting any modification to the phone, specially one like this, SHOULD read and ask a lot of questions before doing it, and be aware of the risks.

Finally, and to answer my own original question, this hack, whilst it allows the phone to play ringtones from the SD card, both default and custom ones, will not allow wma files to be selected for the custom tones, only for the default ringtone.

to BrAGoL, you can name the file where you store the ringtone files whatever you want, just as long as you use the exact path on the registry, and don't forget to use capital S and C in Storage Card, as well as the three in the whole string. Also, and this is a must; when you finish editing the registry, slowly back off the menus until you return to the home screen, close all applications, (using task manager if possible to ensure all background-running apps are closed), wait a moment, and then do a restart on your phone. By common sense, the ringtones will not play if the SD is removed, the default tone will. I haven't had the phone freeze up when receiving a call and not having the SD card present, though it is a very likely consequence.
