Guest arawak Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 I have had this every time I call someone and get the engaged tone. Before I get the engaged tone I hear a particularly harsh tone which almost made me pass out the first time I heard it seeing as the phone was against my ear at the time. I only seem to get the tone whenever I call someone who is using their phone (normally land lines as most mobiles seem to transfer to voice mail). It doesn't seem to make any difference if I turn my volume down either as the tone is still the same volume and very harsh! Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, what have you managed to do to resolve it if anything? Cheers A
Guest yzbob Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 also happens when u have no signal
Guest Rog Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 Yep. I have experienced this too (wife spends way too much time on hte 'phone!) but know of no resolution.
Guest arawak Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 Don't suppose anybody knows if this will be getting rectified in the upcoming update whenever that may be? I find it incredibly annoying not to mention painful to have this happen and if no solution is going to present itself soon I will have to consider getting my money back :( I'm more than happy with the other stuff the phone does (ignoring the few bugs) but this is one thing I can't ignore. I've had my phone a little while now but I am sure if I press Orange hard enough over this I can get a refund as it is most likely damaging my hearing! Anyway if anyone knows if it will be getting resolved I'd love to know :D
Guest madu Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 I second that! It is immensly annoying, moreover it is just painful!! Some of my friends almost passed out after using my phone to make a few phone calls (the number was busy, lol). Orange - do something about it - it hurts!!
Guest arawak Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 I've nearly passed out a few times myself! Especially the very first time I encountered this particular "feature" It's bad enough when you know it happens but when you don't expect it then it's excrutiating. It wouldn't be so bad if turning the volume down made a difference as you could at least wait until you got an answer before turning it up again. The only problem then would be losing your signal or a mates battery running out when you call them  This issue definitely needs addressing sooner rather than later as it really is unacceptable. Surely this could have been tested! No other phone I have had has ever had this issue :D I am going to call Orange later and ask them about it and if no cure to it is imminent I may well ask for a refund :( XDA may be a better option for me if this doesn't get resolved :( Don't really want an XDA though as don't fancy lugging that brick around especially :P

BY US! didnt u know we were all unsuspecting beta testers
Guest arawak Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 Tested, heh Yes what was I thinking  I was forgetting how we are beta testing for Orange  Still I don't like being almost knocked unconscious by my phone especially when I am in the Croydon area. You never know what may happen to you
Guest arawak Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 Just called Orange about this problem this morning and it has been passed on to "tech support" and I am waiting on an answer. Whilst on the phone I asked about the Orange Update and was treated to the answer "huh? what's that?" Obviously I then had to explain that an update to the software could be done over the air and he said he'd ask the data department. They also had no idea about any update to the phone! What I want to know then is who the hell does??? I also queried when the new battery was going to be available and they also had no idea on that! The guy I spoke to is also passing the battery and Orange updates onto "tech support" so hopefully I should be getting some answers soon. If they can't solve my ear damaging unconcious making problem I will be reluctantly returning my SPV as I refuse to accept that amount of pain just to use a phone. I will let you all know as soon as I know something. Cheers A
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 I've not experienced this problem (yet), but when talking to OCS at the end of last year i was told about this infamous update with no promting, so i would assume it _is_ coming, eventually
Guest arawak Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 I've not experienced this problem (yet), but when talking to OCS at the end of last year i was told about this infamous update with no promting, so i would assume it _is_ coming, eventually I have no doubt it will be here eventually but if I have to wait for that to rectify my problem I will be taking the phone back as I can't wait around indefinitely. I value my hearing too much to do that ;) I'll be reluctant to get rid of the SPV but this is an issue I can't put up with. I can accept the odd bug I have experienced but the pain I get from this I can't accept. As much as I am not especially keen I guess the XDA is closest to replacing the SPV  That or a P800 and that looks far to fisher price in appearance especially considering the astronomical cost of the thing in the first place! I guess I will just have to wait and see what Tech Support have to say about it
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 I wouldnt mind an xda myself ;), if you can put up with it though you might want to wait around a bit for the samsung smarphone. Looks nice and is better spec'ed than the spv, Samsung are also a most "established" company imho
Guest arawak Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 You wouldn't happen to have a link to the Samsung phone would you? I'd certainly be interested in taking a look at it ;)
Guest zenabi Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 I can't get the engaged tone at all! When I call a landline that's busy, my SPV plays the "Descending" tone and hangs up, with no warning saying "busy" or anything... Does anyone actually get a "busy" warning message?
Guest arawak Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 You may well be lucky you don't get the engaged tone then  From my experience it isn't all it's cracked up to be and is a rather painful experience. I'm hoping Orange have a solution otherwise I will have to look for an alternative phone  I will keep you posted when they finally answer my questions!

I'd certainly be interested in taking a look at it http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...sung+smartphone I also e-mailed samsung yesterday, only an auto responce so far...
Guest madu Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Now that the cert. has been removed - you can edit registry to play a different sound file for that action.. In case you cannot remove it completely, make a small blank sound file, or a very quiet tone.. Well, I'm pretty sure that is possible.. Since I just had no time to do this so far, let us know if you succeed. With real access to the phone everything is possible (and far more simple to do) heh ;)
Guest arawak Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...sung+smartphone I also e-mailed samsung yesterday, only an auto responce so far... Only one potential problem I can see with this. My previous Samsung had a battery life that sucked more than my SPV  I had the SGH-N400 and I was lucky it lasted a day. My SPV has lasted the weekend before now which is a lot better. I guess we'll have to wait and see ;)
Guest arawak Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 I rang to chase this up at lunchtime as I still hadn't heard anything and was told it could take 5 days. When I asked what I was supposed to do in the meantime the guy I spoke to said "don't use the phone" What the hell use is that? Yes it saves my hearing and stops me almost passing out (a point he seemed to find funny!) but then makes my phone about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike  I asked about getting my dosh back if the problem persisted and he wasn't exactly forthcoming. He was mentioning 14 and 28 day returns but I am already passed both of those ;) I guess if they don't provide a solution I will have to demand a replacement phone as I can't be expected to keep this one with this problem.
