I was trying to download the BonusPrint Mobile software the other day and the Over The Air stuff wasn't working

I know someone at Cognima (the company that made the software) and they got it fixed quickly, but in case anyone else wants it this is the URL for the download:

BonusPrint Mobile info:

• Firstly, you can instantly upload photos you take with your camera-phone to your own personal web album for sharing or printing.

• Secondly, you can synchronise your phone contacts online so if you lose your phone all of your contacts and photos are not lost with it.

Both features come with the standard annual subscription of only £23.88 - equivalent to just £1.99 per month. (see text on network GPRS data charges, below).

No there is a Smartphone version but...

WARNING

I've been trying it out this evening and couldn't understand why it never seemed to actually finish uploading any images.

I put my GPRS traffic monitor on, and turned off my auto email and news feed downloads.

It used 316.6Kb trying to transfer a 54Kb image before I finally gave up on it

Watch your GPRS traffic if you are using this app

I know someone at Cognima, so I'll see if they can help get it sorted, but for now it's off my phone.

Hmm,

I got a reply from my friend at Cognima, but it's not really what I was hoping for (especially considering the extent of the data usage)...

He suggested restarting the phone and trying again, which for me meant reinstalling too, and somehow it is working properly now.

Nope, it's still doing it!

That's another 200+Kb gone

I'll talk to Cognima and Bonus Print again, but for now I would recommend NOT using this app

Statement By Cognima, supplier of Bonusprint Mobile

After speaking directly to chucky.egg who reported the above problems, we have thoroughly investigated the issues raised.

We have established that there is a problem on Microsoft Smartphone 2003 that can occur when an application uploads more than 16 KB of data. This problem is caused by a known Microsoft defect mentioned briefly here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....elopers_faq.asp.

The defect manifests itself when the 'All-Locations Traffic' GPRS counter application is running. However, in itself this is not too serious, because a retry attempt will normally recover from the problem. However, if the GPRS connection is forced to stay open (for example, by the 'Shell Orange 1.3' application), the retry is not successful.

Therefore with the GPRS counter application running at the same time as the application that forces GPRS to stay always-on, Bonusprint Mobile may continually retry uploading an image without success until the phone is restarted. (The same problem may also occur with other applications that attempt to upload more than 16 KB of data.)

There is no known workaround at this time, so we recommend that the combination of 'All-Locations Traffic' and 'Shell Orange 1.3' should not be used together with Bonusprint Mobile (or with any other application that uploads more than 16 KB of data via GPRS).

If anyone else has experienced this issue with our software, or any other software, please do not hesitate to contact us via our website www.cognima.com.

Thank you

Cognima Development Team

Thanks Neil, I'll give it another try

I like MS's approach to bug fixing:

Why do HTTP posts larger than 16K fail on Windows Mobile 2003?

When you move from Windows Mobile 2002 to Windows Mobile 2003 platform, HTTP posts larger than 16KB may fail. After posting 16KB worth of data, the transactions may timeout and report an error. To work around this issue, break the data up into small chunks less than 16KB.

Basically, "if it causes an error, stop using it". Genius

I've tested this again, without the GPRS "keep alive" (Smartease Orange Shell) and I've had no problems since.

I've not removed Smartease yet, but it's turned off and won't be turned on again because the benefit just isn't worth it IMO
