Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 So the SPV C550 will be upon us soon, but it will almost certainly NOT be Windows Mobile 5, it will be almost certainly be Smartphone 2003 Second Edition. Obviously some people will find this a bit peculiar... but will it affect YOUR purchase decision? Bet now! ;) P
Guest beersoft Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 it being wm5 would make the phone a must have, but it missing isn't a deal breaker as long as they manage to keep out some of the 'classic' smartphone features we should be ok, and most of the older apps still work, because im going to be gutted if things like tomtom and eclipse etc... dont work Later Owen
Guest Loukas Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 So the SPV C550 will be upon us soon Paul, do you know anything we don't? ;) How soon is soon?
Guest pierre Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Orange in Switzerland here plans to release it during June IF software works properly (being currently tested) Most (if not all) apps will need to be rewritten due to bigger screen size & resolution, it seems.
Guest adchaffey Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Is it too early for anyone to have a rough idea of when WM5 will be available on a smartphone??? That would be the deal breaker for me, if I didn't have to wait a life time to get WM5 I'd probably hang on...... .... but then again i was impatient enough to install the french update on my UK phone so what the hell do i know!?!? ;)
Guest confused and hungover Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 i would probably get the C550 purely so that i have a different phone from everyone else in the office. WM5 would be nice but not essential, i'm thinking that when it comes out it will be months/years before there is a decent range of software to work with it, is this right?
Guest chucky.egg Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 Some things making me consider whether I want the C550 at the moment: 1) Is it going to be full of dust after a week? 2) Are *all* (or all of my non-Freeware apps) going to work. That's not negotiable for me. 3) Is the performance going to be acceptable (I've heard talk that it felt slow) 4) Is it going to feel too big in comparison to the C500
Guest Oso Posted May 13, 2005 Report Posted May 13, 2005 So the SPV C550 will be upon us soon, but it will almost certainly NOT be Windows Mobile 5, it will be almost certainly be Smartphone 2003 Second Edition. Obviously some people will find this a bit peculiar... but will it affect YOUR purchase decision? P <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I plan on picking one up. I've always had a spare GSM device, in case of loss, destruction, etc. Have not had the luxury of a spare "Smartphone" device, so the 550 will be a welcome addition and the 500 will become my hot spare. As far as the OS is concerned, it doesn't impact me that much, but I imagine with some creative process that any C500 or C550 will be able to have 2005, it's just a question of how attached you are to your operator's custom ROM.
Guest extravagant Posted May 13, 2005 Report Posted May 13, 2005 C550 = nothing specail compared to C500, save your money!
Guest hunyango_uk Posted May 13, 2005 Report Posted May 13, 2005 i strongly agree extravagant. ;) save your money, that's the best thing to do. if you got c500 or sda just stick to it, there's nothing fancy of using c550. they just want to use the popularity and the success of c500 to sell the c550. c500 = c550 (both have the same functions and use.)
Guest beersoft Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 maybe i missed the 320x240 screen and extra hardware buttons on my c500 ;) later Owen
Guest squall Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 yeah but i have to be honest and say thats not enough to make me go out and buy one, c500 is as pretty much as good as, no point getting locked in a contract for the c550
Guest simonbratt99 Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 you talk about buying... but my contracts up in September, so id have the 550 for free (i assume). now thats hard to refuse. (sell ma old c500 for £50 also helps the descision)
Guest squall Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 not really, im talking about being tied to a contract with the c550. Dont get me wrong i like contracts, buti would rather wait until there was a decent phone out before starting one, because if i get an upgrade now i cant get another one in 3 months when hte next phone comes out
Guest Tunney Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 (edited) As nice as the increased screen/camera resolution and extra buttons are, after a year's wait it doesn't seem like a big enough upgrade. I think in this regard HTC are victims of their own success. The C500 was such a massive improvement over the E200 in all respects that it must be hard to come up with a device that's equally revolutionary. Still, I'd like to see one or more of the following: WM5, 2MP camera, 3G, WiFi and/or HD. I'm not convinced by the aesthetics either. HTC's phone always look pretty cheap and generic. The C550 seems to be no exception. I think that I'll wait for the Samsung i300. ;) Edited May 17, 2005 by Tunney
