You need to edit the following registry entry to adjust the backlight settings for the external LCD.

HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Activity Timers/User Activity/Timeout

This is normally set to 2 which means the backlight is on for 4 seconds.

Change the setting to a higher number to increase the length of time the backlight stays on for.
