Guest EMGenius Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 righto, I have had this problem for what seems like ages, and it has been doing my head in!!! But i think i have the solition, without deleting your cemail.vol file and nuking all of your texts/mail. bear with me, and if this does not work for you i am sorry! firstly you need some sort of reg editor (I used dbviewsp) available on Monolithix's site. 1) use the DBViewSP editor to go to IPSMcemail.vol 2) under that go to 'pmailNamedProps' and select it to edit the values 3) scroll down to the very last 2 values, which should be called 'UnreadCou...' 4) delete them 5) restart 6) smile coz u just got rid of that damn annoying message thing!! hope that this works for you guys, it worked for me! Please if you do do this make a backup of your .vol file 'just in case'! sometimes even this genius makes a breakthrough... [Edited to replace reg editore with DBViewSP - Will]
Guest Leggy Posted April 20, 2003 Report Posted April 20, 2003 Go to the top of the class! ;) This has worked a treat on my phone. Excellent discovery - Genius by name, genius by nature  SMS count = 0, e-mail count = 0!! This is more than a workaround: it means you don't have to create a new cemail.vol file, so you don't have to get rid of the text messages that you wanted to keep. For those of you who don't know Monolithix website off by heart, the DBViewSP download - only 38KB - is here dbviewsp I hadn't used the DBView app before now. So, one tip: when using this app, to get to the lower window click right on the SPV's navigation pad. It took me a few minutes to suss this out! My experience of the DBView app: The applications ability to select a file appeared to freeze after I deleted the first file. Just click Menu > About... or something like this, then go back and it will have un-frozen (to use the technical term!). Also, first time I tried this, on powering off phone it was taking forever (over 5 minutes on "Smartphone 2002" screen), so had to pull out battery. However, when I tried it second time it powered off as quickly as usual and everything is fine and dandy now! Good luck, and many thanks to Genius again! Leggy P.S. Any chance of this being put among the "Articles" section?? Surely we all have this message count problem?
Guest EMGenius Posted April 20, 2003 Report Posted April 20, 2003 cheers Leggy, i'm getting all excited now, i feel all warm inside... at last someone understands...
Guest undercoverBrother Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 truly a genius ;) this thing had been bothering me for weeks and orange could not sort it out many many thanks UnderCover Brother
Guest Fick Posted April 28, 2003 Report Posted April 28, 2003 When I first tried this I deleted both of the bottom two registry items, and it fixed the problem. But it also reset a few settings here and there, like mail servers and msn sign in settings; nothing major but a few annoyances. The problem has just popped up again, and this time I tried deleting only the last one, figuring that one might be for the sms counter and one for the email counter. This appears to have just reset the sms counter (the one i had the rogue message on) without reseting any other settings. Anyone else care to try this approach next time their phone throws a wobbler and see if they get the same result. It might be a slight refinement on this already great solution!
Guest mlkanapi Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 Nice work. I did not think it was possible to correct the ghost message in the SMS counter but you did it! Congratulations! ;)
Guest Proactivity Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 No more phantom SMS.. wahoo! It's given me a phantom email instead. Hmph. The thing is, I don't have any emails on there.. I used IA Space Manager to delete them all. Any ideas?
Guest EMGenius Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 have a dig around ion the registry near where i mentioned above, i seem to remember a key that had something to do with e-mail. just speculating though, ha not checked, os i could be talking complete sh*te! worth a go though!
Guest rashah Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 firstly you need some sort of reg editor (I used dbviewsp) available on Monolithix's site. 1) use the reg editor to go to IPSMcemail.vol Sorry to be thick, but my Reg Editor only shows 4 HKEY folders, and ISPM isn't in them....help?!
Guest caio1 Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 @rashah it's a typo, you need to use dbview not regedit (as written in the 2nd post). Caio
Guest MoRFLeZ Posted May 13, 2003 Report Posted May 13, 2003 I was giving this walkthru a quick test, in order to be able to fix the problem (should it ever occur..) And I found the files but I'm a little clueless as to how to delete them! 1) Delete Record 2) Delete Database (A lil clueless wonder I know)
Guest boyced Posted May 14, 2003 Report Posted May 14, 2003 What is Phantom SMS. Is it where it just shows the number of the sender instead of the name? Please Reply.
Guest MoRFLeZ Posted May 14, 2003 Report Posted May 14, 2003 Ummm no .. it's when the counter tells you, that you have sms, but you don't have any. The other can easilly be fixed, if you put the country code infront of your contacts. Like for England +44 And Denmark +45 etc etc
Guest ist Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 my "phantom" happens only when i open the phone, I get a message like I just got an sms, but when i go to inbox, there's none. and when i go back to homescreen, the sms counter is already back to (0). if i just dont turn off the phone, this does not happen but sometimes i have to close it [when i get unwanted calls ] will this fix by EMGenius solve it? sorry to say this but i think i got the phantom after using sms2mail...
Guest ist Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 hey, i tried the fix and it works!!! thanks a lot EMGenius....
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 sorry to say this but i think i got the phantom after using sms2mail... I'd be surprised if it was related as this is a known problem that has been around since the SPV phone was first made. Interesting thought though.
Guest cthulhu Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 I can also confirm that EMGenius' procedure works a treat, and as Fick said, you only need to delete the last entry to reset the SMS count. The cause of my Phantom SMS seemed to be reading an email before it was fully downloaded, although why this should affect the SMS count and not the Email count I cannot understand.

I'd just like to confirm what cthulhu sez - happened to me when I read a downloaded email in too much of a hurry, only needed to delete the last entry, and thanks EMGenius, that was a genius bit of work  To answer MoRFLeZ and anyone else who's wondering: Select "Delete Record", not "Delete Database" - it will then ask you (somewhat alarmingly) "alert: Delete ALL selected records?" - but since you should have just the one selected, that should be fine.

Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 16, 2003 Report Posted June 16, 2003 If the counter is reset i wouldn't worry about backing up
Guest hank Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 forgive my obvious stupidity, but where on my spv do i install dbviewsp ? I've done the decert et al, downloaded and unzipped but dunno where to put it to run it. I'm new to all this and not very bright at all this stuff.

Guest m1.carson Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Hi, I suffered from this for a month, it apeared to start when I was sent my first photomessage which I didn't get, Orange exchanged my SPV.
