I believe it's your contacts and calendar databases.

But not 100% sure

is it really the contacts and calendar?i synched all my contacts and calendar after doing a hard reset but the mxip_initdb.vol wasnt that big.it just became bigger and bigger as time went by without adding anything to my contacts and calendar.

mxip_initdb.vol has something to do with the phones CONTACTS database.

What made me say that?

Via active sync, I renamed my mxip_initdb.vol to mxip_initdb.vol2 then did a restart. Since mxip_inidb.vol is part of the IPSM (rom), an 'empty' mxip_initdb.vol was created after the restart. With this 'empty' .vol file, I noticed that my contacts folder was also empty.

How did I restore the contents of my Contacts folder?

I renamed the 'empty' mxip_initdb.vol to mxip_initdb.vol3 then mxip_initdb.vol2 to mxip_initdb.vol. And indeed after a restart, contacts info were restored.

 With those observations, I think its safe to say that mxip_initdb.vol stores the contacts databases.

To rename your mxip_initdb.vol then backup to PC (from phone to PC)

...with the PC settings below (#1), I think you can copy any file (except some executables and resource files) from Windows folder or IPSM to PC.

1. In your PC, open My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View. Follow the settings as shown below. Click 'Apply' when done.

2. Open Microsoft ActiveSync then rename mxip_initdb.vol in directory IPSM (shown below is IPSM folder with mxip_initdb.vol renamed to mxip_init.vol2)

view.gif

3. Highlight the renamed .vol file then Cut-Paste to specified folder in you PC

- some files should be renamed first before you can copy them to your PC.

That's it! You have now renamed the file and have a backup on your PC

As a proof, look at the mxip_initdb.vol I copied from my IPSM folder. Its now on my PC (drive F).

What's the significance of the trick?

For backup purposes (before a ROM upgrade/hardreset), restore database (calendar, contacts and tasks db) after a hard reset

oh ok.i just couldn't believe before that the mxip_initdb.vol is the contacts database because when i edited the registry setting of call history, the mxip_initdb.vol went up from 400kb to 600kb.why is that?

To restore your original mxip_initdb.vol (from PC to phone)

..you will notice that after you have renamed your mxip_initdb.vol then made a restart, activesync wont work anymore and you now have an 'empty' mxip_initdb.vol file. dont panic. here's the trick:

1. With the phone powered off, connect it to your PC.

2. Power on the phone. (note that activesync icon now flashes green)

3. Go to IPSM folder and rename mx_ipintdb.vol to mxip_initdb.volempty (or any file extension other than .vol)

4. Paste mxip_initdb.vol from pc (the original one you have back-upd) to IPSM folder

5. Remove cable

6. Restart phone then connect to your PC (activesync should work at this point)

7. Remove the renamed .vol file in IPSM (instruction 3)

That's it! You have now restored your original mxip_initdb.vol: contacts, calendar and tasks database

Tried to cut and paste the renamed mxip_initdb.vol and cemail.vol pero sabi sharing violation occuured, so close ko lahat applications ayaw pa ma-copy, reset ko ung phone then it generated a new mxip_initdb.vol and cemail.vol so na cut and paste ko na ung mxip_initdb.vol2 and cemail.vol2 pero tpos nung paste, ung cemail.vol2 lng ang nakita ko, bigla nawala po ung mxip_initdb.vol2, as in parang bula... meron na ba sa inyo nangyari ganito? sayang kc, ung messages n lng sana ung nawala instead of the contacts... hay buhay...

nakopya mo din yung mxip_initdb.vol kaya nga lang hidden sya. punta ka sa Explorer, click mo Tools, Folder Options. Tapos sa view, tanggalin mo yung check dun sa Hide Protected operating system files.

i just discovered this today.to those who already know about this,i'm sorry for being redundant but this is just for the benefit of those who dont.if you already know this,i ain't talking to ya!(kidding, hehe! :))

as most of us know, the mxipinitdb.vol gets so unreasonably big without adding anything to your contacts, calendar and speed dials. the call history has a limit of 100(by default) and it's not supposed to size up your mxipinitdb.vol to hundreds of KBs.this procedure is very simple and i'm worried this might be redundant already to some.but anyway, here it is.

you'll need:

1. mitac phone back up application

2. a computer with active sync(of course)

3. usb cable or cradle(obviously)

step 1:

back up your contacts and calenday notes using mitac phone back up.

step 2:

connect the phone to the computer and rename the mxipinitdb.vol to anything you want.

step 3:

restart the phone.you'll see that the phone created a new but empty mixipinitdb.vol file which is about 132kb.

step 4:

run mitac phone back up and restore your contacts and calendar notes that you backed up a while back.

step 5:

you'll see that your contacts and calendat notes have been restored but do not connect the phone to the computer yet.

step 6:

go to your active sync on your pc and go to OPTIONS.then RULES and choose "replace items on this computer"

step 7:

connect the phone and you'll see that the phone will normally sync.BUT your mixipintdb.vol wont be anymore as big as it was.

from 860kb,mine went down to just 260kb. if you have a bootloader .93 and a spare sd card, you might not have to do a hard reset ever again.you can restore your IPSM once your mixipinitdb.vol sizes up again.this procedure never affected my registry settings at all. hope this helps.
