Hi there

Here is a possible solution for sending and saving email attachments

Currently the email command of Smartphone2002 doesn't allow the user to attach a file. Moreover there isn't an option to save an attached file to a folder. Consequently, no mean is envisaged so that the users can exchange files between their SPV. However there is a solution to send a picture file by the email option of the MMS command. But this option will be probably taxed like a standard MMS at the end of the free period...

The Forward command: A way to thwart this problem.

When an email with an attached file is received then he is stored into the Inbox of Pocket Outlook. It is also possible to forward this email towards another email address then he is forwarded with its attached file... Thus, this action is not the same thing as to send an email with an attached file?

By looking this way it must be possible to find an answer to the problem:

1. The initial idea would be to simply replace the name of the attached file by another one, but unfortunately it is not possible. The field 'name of file' is locked.

2. Another idea seems to be better. Indeed, the data of the attached files are stored into an *.att file located under the path ipsmmapiattachments of the SPV. For example, if you receive an attached mypicture.jpg into the Inbox, then its data will be stored in a xxxxx.att file. It is simple to verify: just change the extention *.att of this file by *.jpg. So if you try to open this file you will find your picture!

Then, from these observations it becomes possible to send an email with an attached file - and - to save a received attached file.

End of the theory, here is the procedure:

Before you start make sure:

- To have configured your email client (POP3 and SMTP)

- To have installed ALL-Explorer and to be familiarized with its use.

How to save the attached file of a received email?

a.) Receive your email in the Inbox and completely download the attached file (e.g: mypicture.jpg).

b.) Launch ALL-Explorer, go to ipsmmapiattachments and rename the xxxxx.att file by mypicture.jpg

c.) Now you just need to move your file in the directory of your choice.

How to send an email with an attached file?

a.) Send you an email with an attached file (e.g: mypicture.jpg).

b.) Receive your email in the Inbox and completely download the attached file.

c.) Launch ALL-Explorer, go to the folder where you have stored the file which you want to send. Make a copy of it.

d.) Now go to ipsmmapiattachments and replace the xxxxx.att file by your own file - Just by pasting your file here - Be also careful to rename your file by using the name of the previous one (xxxxx.att).

e.) Then you can go to the Inbox and use the Forward command to send your new email. Just add a new address and change the text content if necessary.

Note: If you have several emails with attached files in your Inbox, then you will have necessarily so many *.att files. So, pay attention to the *.att file which you intend to use. A classification by dates should be better.

P.S: If a programmer can find a way to automate this procedure, he will be welcome! Unless he know how to add the famous 'Add a file' option to the email command... :D

We need an automated process for this - surely it is not that hard...

It's called "Sticky" isn't it? ;)

I think he meant an automated attachment process

Yep!! Just as Keystroke said - I meant an .exe to do the attachment for us. Basically I could make one in VBA (don't laugh) but that won't work on the phone.. This would only take me a few moments.

1. Select an attachment to send

2. Opens folder IPSMMAPIAttachments

3. You select a file to replace

4. It remembers name of the file. Delets it. And copies a new attachment with that filename. Then opens Inbox for you...

Some 'more clever' programming would allow you to actually select an email (accessing .vol files) with an attachment (say if you have more than 1 email) and pulls out the name of attachment so you don't need to select the file manually. etc.
