My dilemma: mpx200 vs. p900

I know it's not an equal battle, but I need your thoughts on this...

Now here's my situation... I can get the mpx200 for 99 euros or the p900 for 379 euros (quite a difference ey?)

Now my considerations:

mpx200 is smaller

p900 is thinner

mpx200 can accept SD cards unlimited

p900 only 128mb duo MS

mpx200 works on Windows 2002 (not my fav)

p900 has a larger screen

p900 has touchscreen

mpx200 is clamshell which protects the screen

Now my main objective is to use the phone to surf the internet, mostly post on boards (like this one)

e-mail is no biggie coz I want my mails on my pc, not the phone.

camera is no biggie either coz I had camphones before and they aren't all that! BT on the other hand is a biggie coz I like to use it.

Now the price tag has set me slightly in favor of the Moto... but I just can't get the SE out of my head...

share your thoughts/experiences with me plz!

ive got a moto mpx200 and i think its a wicked phone. i can live without BT as i can send files and sync ove IR. i have no need 4 a BT headset which is BT's main purpose in a phone.

Hmm, if it wasn't for the Bluetooth I would say the Mpx200 is a no brainer. Build quality, reliability, stability.

Then again, I think it should be possible to upgrade the MPx200 to WM2003 and you should be able to add BT through a BT SD card.

The single thing against the P900 is the Memory Stick limitation. Smartphones need big memories!

Get a Nokia 6600

I will never get a Nokia again! Between Dec. 2002 and Jan. 2003 I had 3 different Nokia's and they all went dead within 14 days... no sir, thanx but no thanx

one of my friends recently got a p900

I can say this:

the p900 seemed unstable (it crashed it twice within an hour last time i saw it!)

the p900 has very expensive memory (a 128mb duo card generally costs more than a 256mb SD card does  )

the p900 has better battery life

the p900's web browser is a lot faster than the smartphone's version

Personally, i'd go for the motorola :)

(mainly due to the fact i struggle for space sometimes with a 256mb card, and i just don't like the symbian OS at all)

I don't know about the Moto, but the battery on the P900 can last for 3 days with medium use and I've stretched it out to 4 days with light use.

The bigger P9 screen makes web browsing much more pleasant, but sometimes it's still too small (esp. for "badly" designed web pages)

128Mb memory limit hasn't caused me an issue yet, but Memory Sticks are up to twice the price of SD cards. I use the bundled 32Mb one for apps, photos etc (still only half full after loading all the extra apps I will probably ever use) and I have a 128Mb Stick for OGGs/Videos etc

I've never had a crash on my P9, compared to god knows how many lock-ups with the MS Smartphone (E100). I'm sure I've read that the Moto is more reliable though... Can't remember.

If you do go for a P9 I would recommend NOT getting an Orange branded one - you can't update the firmware, and it'll be locked to Orange. You can get them for £50 on O2 tariffs, so the total cost is about £280

Hey Chris thnx for the reply...

would you say browsing on the P9 is pretty good for message boards liike Modaco? that's the main use I have for it :)

Also I will get an unbranded one... Orange doesn't even offer them branded here I just want the Orange contract coz they are cheaper for GPRS

I have both (looking in 4 sale section) and both are very good phones.

The P900 has been very good for browsering emails and the internet. With the P900 you can use WAP to browser, very usefull if you have loads of free minutes. It comes with a Word/Excel viewer and a very good Opera browser.

The MPx200 is also good with email and internet. But using it to view full web pages with GPRS can get very expensive.

I personally think its a better as a phone then the P900. I use the MPx200 everyday and the P900 at home.

You should try a Nokia 6600, I have used it for a week and I didn't like it. It felt a bit bulky and crashed on me a few times.

I think it's as good as you can get on a Phone/PDA (the XDAII has a bigger screen but it's more of a PDA/Phone)

This is a screen short of the MoDaCo Portal:

Ignore the grey borders - they're from the screen shot app!

doesn't look too shabby... I'll have to check the shops to play with them in real life... I played with the mpx200 already but it didn't have gprs at that time :)

the p900 is quite difficult to get a live model somehow

Z1010 looks n..i..c..e..

But is it me, or have they been showing it off for a while without actually making any yet?

Can you get them in the stores anywhere?

The Z1010 is no longer on the coming soon page on the SE website and on the out now section.

Z1010

Its expected to be launched in 2 weeks'ish.

PS. On the Z1010 spec, its says it has "long range bluetooth" 100 meters, bluejack heaven.

The theoretical 384/64kbps downstream/upstream is what I want!

Oh, and company-funded data tariff!

Chris thnx for the screenshot, can anyone get me a screenshot of the mpx200 browsing???

smokedog you said you have the moto and SE... can you tell me which one browses better for you and which phone you like most?

the z1010 has awesome specs... it looks a bit thick tho or is that just me?

man this is such a hard decision... the moto is still slightly ahead I think.

Browsering on the P900 is awesome! period. No other phone has a nicer or bigger screen. The bulit in browser has problems with some websites but it comes with Opera and that handles most, if not all webpages.

But when all said and done I perfer the MPx200, because its more of a phone.

If you already have an MS Smartphone the screen will be the same - screen size is standard for these devices. I'm not sure, but I think the Moto owners prefer their keys/joystick... pretty sure I read that somewhere here.

... can you tell me which one browses better for you and which phone you like most?

Browsing experience relies on more than just screen size. for example the P9's built in browser is a bit poor, but you can't tell the P9 which app to use to open URLs, so if you click on a link in an email it will always open in the built in browser. You have to copy the link and paste it into Opera to open the page in Opera.

Little things like that (which don't bother me TBH) are the sort of niggles you get.

The z1010 is a 3G phone, not a smartphone as we currently know them.

I don't know what OS it runs, but I'm certain it's neither Windows nor Symbian.

You have to copy the link and paste it into Opera to open the page in Opera.

Just to be clear... unlike Windows, Copy and Paste functions are built in to almost all textboxes etc in Symbian, so it's literally a 2-click operation

Guest pradaboy

the copy&paste situation is no bother for me, I will not do a lot of e-mailing on it or click links in mails, it is mainly to provide me with online access through out the day :)

I'm still torn between the choices... P9 is perfect for me but maybe the mpx200 will also suffice and it'll save me almost €300

I think I have a solution...

I'm gonna call the shop and ask if I can try the Moto for a week or so and then make my final decision, if they're any good they'll let me have a try-out period won't they?

If I don't like it I'll exchange it for the P900 BUT if I do like it I saved myself €300...

not bad ey?

Not sure about a "trial" handset - I can't see many shops (if any!) in the UK letting you do that. Give it a try though... you've got nothing to lose!

Over here there's some "rule" (might not be a rule, just something the networks offer) about being able to return a product purchased by phone or over the internet in the first 14-days - so if you buy something and it's not what you expected it to be you can just send it back and everything just gets cancelled. You still have to pay for any use of the product (like talk time you used, or SMS etc).

Might be worth seeing if you have a similar facility where you are. Buy the Moto and see how it works out... :)
