Smartphone = PocketPC/Palm replacement

I recently purchased an MPx200 and I believe it will soon eliminate the need for my Ipaq Pocket PC. The main things I miss when using the smartphone are:

- Tasks and appointents on the home screen (i.e. Pocket Informant w/ Today Plugin or Agenda Fusion)

- Avantgo - I am trying out WOL (just registered it) and it works pretty well but it is not as integrated as Avantgo on the Pocket PC.

I am hoping that soon I will not need to carry my Pocket PC. What do you think?

After my Ipaq got stolen last January, and the Sony Clie didn't come up to scratch, I went for a SPV. Hand on heart I can say that aside from the convenience of having a touch screen and missing Avant Go, I have not missed my Ipaq once.

And thanks to MoDaCo, I get so much more out of (my now) E100 than I ever did my Ipaq! :)

It will never replace my Dell Axim. They do two different things for me. The Axim isn't used as much as my Smartphone, but I can't imagine not having it for certain things. E-books-They are hard enough on a PPC to read, I just couldn't bear to do it on a phone. Videos-They work on the phone, but the larger screen, faster processor, and 2.2GB CF Microdrive that I have can't be beaten on a phone. Games-Sorry, but we have to face it; gaming on a Smartphone is cool, and better than any other phone out there, but it can never beat a PPC.

The Smartphone, however, can get internet almost anywhere! I use it for this more than I use my PPC for anything. Obvously, I make calls with it, and I can't do that with my PPC (I have yet to find a PPC Phone that meet my needs as either a phone or a PPC). That is pretty much all I use my phone for. Internet (Agile Messenger, Inbox, and PIE), and phone calls. But it does that great.

In short, I MUST have both of these items.

All I'm waiting for is Wi-Fi. Once that is there and working well, there will be no use for my PocketPC anymore. If I can get Marius to port Ministumbler to the .net platform for Smartphones, it will be a *HUGE* plus!

It's too bad that the MPx220 has the old display resolution. :)

the advantages of a pocket pc over the smartphone in all its versions is the battery life ,screensize and the software as well ,there is so much good freeware out there , maybe one day the smartphone will catch up but that lies with the makers and software producers all who determine the future of all products

What you've said is true, but the advantage of the smartphone over the pocket pc is that it's smaller and you always have your phone with you. It totally depends on the user.

For me I wasn't disciplined enough to use my palm based pda (and I'd probably be the same with a pocket pc) where as since my phone is allready always with me the discipline to actually put useful information on it has been much easier.

I have updated the poll to not be Pocket PC specific... 8)

The problem with the Pocket PC and other devices I have owned is size. I carry the Pocket PC during business hours but don't like to carry it otherwise. In the winter I found that it is not so bad becuase I can put it in a coat pocket but in the summer it becomes a bother.

My phone, on the other hand, is always with me so it simply is a matter of can the phone do what the Pocket PC does for me with minimal scarifices. The answer is mostly yes. With some better software it becomes a certain yes.

I hardly ever use my pda now, but im using the pda functions of my smartphone more than ever.

I do miss the bigger screen of the pda and the speed but the size and battery life is a lot better than my toshiba e310 (its about the same, the pda has better standby but the usage time on the mpx is more)

Don't use my iPaq as an organizer anymore, but it has found good use for it as a Navigation system in my car, with Tomtom Navigator and a Bluetooth GPS receiver. It works quite well.

For the SPV to really replace the iPaq I'd need Tomtom Navigator for Smartphone (and while at that, add the feature to use the gprs to route around traffic jams).

Maybe it's just me, but what's so great about AvantGo?

Avantgo is not great but it is nicely integrated on the Pocket PC and it is also quite a bit faster than what I use on the Smartphone (WOL).

I have, however, grown accustomed to WOL so it doesn't bother me as much as it did originally.

My biggest complaint is the weak task and appointment management. I have been using Oxios ToDo list and am very satisfied but i still need a better appointment/calendar solution and I would like tasks and appointments to be displayed simultaneously in an Agenda type view.

I use Pocket Informant on the Pocket PC and I miss it on the Smatphone.

Likewise, AvantGo ain't the greatest thing ever, but convenient more than anything. Say you want to check the TV listings - no having to connect, visit Orange homepage etc - it's there ready for you.

If Zio can do me a decent copy of Sim City 2000 like the one they did for my PocketPC i may be swayed

I don't really think the Smartphone would replace the PocketPC, its a little too small to be be as productive. But for things like calender, checking email etc the Smartphone is perfect.

I would be interested in trying a PocketPC Phone as I think this would suit my preferences more than my E200.
