Not sure which to upgrade to - E200 or MPx200.

Hi everyone :D

This is my first post here, having quietly read the forums for quite some time. I know the two phones have been compared a lot but your opinions and advice would be very much valued. Right now I have just finished my twelve-month commitment and am on Orange Everyday 50. Having spoken with the rententions department at Orange UK they have made the following offers:

- Motorola MPx200 for free on upgrade - instead of £49.99.

- Orange SPV E200 for £79.99 on upgrade - instead of £179.99.

At the moment I have an E100 and had an original SPV when they first came out too. There is no way I would ever have anything but a Smartphone now  The question is just which. On the SPV & E100 that camera attachment was always a pain but having a built in one looks useful so does the bluetooth. I don't think the MPx200 offers anything over the E100 except a 'customised' OS? Having played with both the screen on the MPx200 seemed a lot darker. The Orange shop representative only let me fiddle for a few moments with each though.

There are two things I am wondering in particular:

1) Is the screen brightness adjustable on the Motorola MPx200?

2) More importantly: does either the E200 or MPx200 fix the SMS bug where you can only SMS your Mobile number for any given contact? As in, can you SMS any mobile number for a contact, even if it is not in the contact field.

Thanks for reading :) I look forward to your views. Take care!

I'm having the same problem with P900 vs. MPX200 but in your comparison I would go for the Moto for sure...

the E200 is too lousy for that kind of money, it's bulky and there are just too many flaws.

Get the Moto or wait till the MPX220 comes out with BT and camera :)

one thing to consider is the software the motorola comes with the same software as the old spv and E100 ,and the E200 comes with the 2003 software, the motorola is more hackable than the spv E200 is ( at the moment ) as its not an orange only phone unless you buy it in orange and get the orange version software installed.there is at present no camera on the motorola ,in the future maybe at a cost iam sure,as the E200 has one built in. both phones are nice and it depends on what phone you like the look of the most as you will have to carry it around with you for a year. i opted for the spv E200 after hearing a few things over the motorola from an insider.this phone has had a lot of problems ( as does the E200 still )and still has which is why in a lot of countrys the launch was delayed and some countrys have 2002 and some 2003 ,if you want the motorola it maybe best to wait if the only version you can get is 2002 software its like buying a new computer with wondows 98 instead of xp

E-200 for me :)

I was reading a while back on MoDaCo that Orange are trying to change people to other tariffs who already have "Everyday 50". I'd try and keep that if I were you :D

its all down to personal preference.

the main problem i have with the e200 is that the battery life sucks if you want to use a sd card it in.

the current rumour on the grapevine is that there is a wm2k3 update comming for the motorola so the only things left to decide on are bluetooth and camera.

I recently upgraded to an mpx200 and it's a lovely phone and looks class but just doesn't do anything different from my spv (although it's a bit quicker).

If you are happy with your spv then upgrade to an mpx200, however I need some new toys so am waiting for the jiffy bag from Orange so I change it for an e200...

Pre-note: sorry for the long note guys!

Thanks for the comments so far guys :D It is really appreciated 8)

Earlier today I had the oppurtunity to go into an Orange Shop in town. As I get along with the staff there quite well they let me play with both E200 and MPx200 phones for about an hour each :)

I can see why people like the MPx200 because it is 'smaller' in a sense. But the handset I used - remember it is Orange based - did not seem to be any quicker than an E100. Plus the screen is sooo dark compared to any of the SPVs I have used. The screens on all the MPx200 phones I have seen seem to be quite dull. Does anyone know a way to make them brighter?

As an interesting note the sales representatives were absolutely convinced a camera attachment is being released by Orange for the MPx200 phone. They will be marketing it soon and is in their upcoming catalogue apparently. I didn't see the catalogue but they assured me that was the case. If the camera isn't too expensive than the MPx200 would only lack bluetooth - which most people seem to find more important.

Personally I liked the E200 better. Admittedly like you guys I have read about all the bugs. I don't get why people say the E200 is bulky, it is the same size as an E100. The sound quality is not as clear but louder than an MPx200. Plus once you've connected to GPRS it cannot be disconnected until a reboot. But at least you can make and receive calls while on GPRS now, unlike the original SPV & E100. The camera attachment is really cool and the screen is sooo much brighter.

Finally, in case anyone is interested, I found out that you can text message any contact number for an SMS from either the MPx200 or E200. Well it worked on the handsets I tried at least : ) Hope that helps.

Please feel free to add any more thoughts to the thread!

That is what I am thinking too. Now that I am out of the twelve month commitment getting upgraded is important. That way it will be a lot harder for Orange to turn around and take Everyday 50 away  It is a fantastic tariff, even if you don't use it all the time. From what I gather SIMs with Everday 50 can 'sell' for upto £75 and more online. That's crazy

Glad you like the E200 8)

I assume you mean a camera which fits the SD Card slot :) Although having a second phone would be good; you could hold one against each ear and hear everything in stereo!

Sorry if the information is old and has probably been discussed many times over. I wasn't aware a camera had been made for the MPx200 yet. Having done a search on Google I can see lots of results about it and UK retailers antipicating to retail it.

Admittedly I haven't got around to upgrading the OS on my own E100 yet. I did it for a friends though and didn't see the new capability of being able to send a message to any number for a contact. Still that's good it has FINALLY been added 8)

As a side query: is it only the E200 which can have multiple e-mail addresses or have Motorola / the new OS upgrade fixed that too?

the multiple account feature is courtesy of wm2003, if the Moto gets the upgrade (which shouldn't be too long from now) the Moto would be able to do this too
