Guest ajb3000 Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Will a bluetooth signal (from a phone to a BT dongle) go through a floor? My PC is upstairs and I would like to be able to sit downstairs surfing the net on my mobile through the PCs internet connection via Bluetooth, but will they be able to connect?
Guest blewer Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Mine works the other way round, (PC is downstairs and I can surf upstairs) :) Sometimes cuts off but seems to work most the time :D
Guest MECX Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 hehe depends how thick your floors are :) Thats pritty sweet tho--you think i could link a laptop to surf the web in the same way over bluetooth?
Guest ajb3000 Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 You'd be better off using Wi-Fi, much larger range and higher speeds.
Guest MECX Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 but i already have a bluetooth dongle and i can get another one for like £15. How much would it cost me for a PCI WIFI card and a PCMCIA WIFI card? and is it possible to have my desktop connected to the internet over LAN and then allow the laptop access through the WIFI card (if i get one). Sorry i kinda hijacked this thread  :)

My PC is upstairs and I would like to be able to sit downstairs surfing the net on my mobile through the PCs internet connection via Bluetooth, but will they be able to connect? Therw are many posts all over this board about the poor range of Bluetooth signal on the E200. With my 2 Nokia N-gages, I can sit upstairs at my laptop, and communicate solid with an N-gage in a room downstairs, and to the front of the house at that! That means it is going through a wall, a floor, and another wall to reach it - no problem. With my E200, I can't even sit in my toilet (where else would mobile browsing be so handy?), point my phone through the window, and back into my bedroom window, and communicate with my PC just 15 foot away (an 'L' shaped building layout). I have about 8 different bluetooth devices now. My E200, in keeping with many other posts on here, has the poorest BT range you could ever imagine.
Guest c0053659 Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Would it help buying a 100metre range dongle?
Guest shadamehr Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Would it help buying a 100metre range dongle? Not in the slightest. Just as in the analogy of a chain being no stronger than its weakest link... Because its the E200 that is the limiting factor - it has only a described 10metre range - its a BT Class 1 device, not Class 2. So no good that your PC is beaming out a solid signal for 100M if ya phone can only send back a signal as far as 10M.
Guest blewer Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 its a BT Class 1 device, not Class 2 Other way round  Class 1 = up to 100m Class 2 = 10m
Guest shadamehr Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Other way round  Class 1 = up to 100m Class 2 = 10m Indeedy matey - just as long as you knew what I meant... So I guess that means that my E200 is one of the brand new Class 3 devices, yeah? i.e., a 1m range *lol*
Guest ajb3000 Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Well I'll have a P900 very soon, this is the phone I want to use the Bluetooth net thingy with, so hopefully the range on that will be better than the e200.

It is. Or at least, I can happily communicate with the sister-in-law's P900 from my PC, or N-gage, sometimes even to next door, where she lives. Contrast that with my E200...

Guest c0053659 Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Ok then shadamehr :) (brainiac) is the bluetooth range on the E200 a hardware fault? If so are Orange going to call the phones back? Or Is it a software fault? If so are orange going to release an update anytime soon?
Guest MECX Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 i wouldent say they would do either as its not a 'fault' just the range isnt that good, the bluetooth works.

If so are Orange going to call the phones back? Or Is it a software fault? If so are orange going to release an update anytime soon? As a Class 2 range of 10m is always deemed to be "under ideal conditions/no obstructions etc", then in reality, they could just argue it is doing what it is meant - so no, I would doubt any action on Orange/HTC's part. Its just sad that so many other types of phone have such a huge increase in Bluetooth range over it.
