Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Hey all! This evening I have been playing around with the different ROM versions on the Voyager devices. It is very interesting to note that the QTek and the xPhone feature newer ROM versions than the e200 device. As far as I can work out, there are three major differences. Firstly, it's seems as though these operators have chosen to implement the Arcsoft MMS client, rather than using the OS integrated one found on the e200. Secondly, there are massive changes in the area of T9! The changes I have discovered are as follows... - IT NO LONGER APPEARS TO LOSE WORDS - You can now switch language mid message, and have a different language set to the main phone language - You no longer hold * to toggle input method, instead it brings up a menu of input options - You no longer press * to toggle between words, you use the up and down no the joystick to choose the word - When you have used a word, it becomes the first choice for that keypress in the future. For example, by default, the word ROM is number six or thereabouts. By using it, it becomes the first selection for that key combination. Finally, battery life is VASTLY superior to the e200 build. I haven't used it a great deal yet, but it's definitely better! More differences as I find them! P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Brilliant :!: A vastly superior battery sounds rather good. Im also guessing that when Orange release the rom update for the E-200, we'll hopefully have a fixed T9 system :?: spacecowboy
Guest carlosp_uk Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Wow! About time they did this, storing the first-choice has been a major part of the Nokia implementation of T9 for years. Also, I love the fact that on Nokia you can go BACK to a previously entered word and alter the selection, whereas it's decided for good on SPV once you've moved on. No good if you notice later on that you've made a mistake! Are any of the other major bugs fixed? (e.g. 404 headers in IE, bluetooth headset profile)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 No idea, what 404 headers problem? Will play with the headset tomorrow, but don't expect any changes... Oh yes, and audio quality sounds good, but then I never noticed a buzz before... P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Just tapping the red button immediately disconnects GPRS, but unfortunately, so does holding it! P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Timed GPRS disconnect works! P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 IA Space Maker is linked from the Start Menu, but still has no multiple mailbox support. P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest carlosp_uk Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 "]No idea, what 404 headers problem? Actually, to be honest this could be Orange's website instead of the spv; not sure. If you try to download a CAB file from the Orange site that doesn't exist, you get the hilarious message... "CAB File not found. We should output 404 headers here etc" ...Nice work guys!
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Sounds to me like the whole phone has been reworked - good news IMO :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 When you scroll down in IE, it scrolls smooth and fast. Doesn't the O ROM scroll a page at a time or something silly? I can't believe the number of changes, some of which feel as if they are a direct result of my initial e200 feedback I gave to O. I'm impressed! P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 So impressed you posted twice lol - excellent :!: It good that they actually value your opinion too :!:
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Smilies in the default dictionary, although not the word 'Smilies', heh... :-) :-( ;-) :-* P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 It's worth noting however I have identified a bug in the new t9 system, where when composing a new message, the first word sometimes gets prefixed with rogue characters that must be left in memory from your last use. The disappearing words on word wrap bug still exists too... P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 The MMS client, although less integrated, can send, receive and indeed record on the phone AMR files. We are unlikely to see the Arcsoft client in an Orange build though I guess... P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 Another point to note, the version discussed here is the xPhone and QTek build, 1.7.10.2 / 4.20.13291.0. Apparently the iMate device has a 1.9 build, and so could contain further fixes! P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest pisquee Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 What would these updates do to an Orange E200 version? i.e. would it still work on orange, is it SIM locked etc? i.e. - is it worth upgrading to these versions, or waiting til orange release their version. Speaking of which, paul, have you heard anything from Orange about a time scale for an update?

Speaking of which, paul, have you heard anything from Orange about a time scale for an update? ^ Bumping up, becuase THESE are the things we are so dying to hear... Well, Paul, Mr O... This has to be one of the key threads we have been waiting for. Can anyone tell me, are Orange gonna release a new ROM soon, and if not, can we safely update to a non Orange ROM? How were you doing it Paul > three seperate hardware devices, or what?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 At present, you can't update between versions as no downloads of the builds are available, they only come pre-loaded no the device in question. I have no idea of timescales for an update, that'd be one for Mr O. P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Well, Paul, Mr O... This has to be one of the key threads we have been waiting for. Â Can anyone tell me, are Orange gonna release a new ROM soon, and if not, can we safely update to a non Orange ROM? Â To quote Mr Orange, As always, we're working on updates to continually improve products like this and we are working with HTC to prepare an update for the E200. This should iron out as many of these niggles as possible. Expect the update in early 04. Â Thread link <> spacecowboy
Guest beersoft Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I have a question, it might be stupid but do the other (o2/qtek) builds do diagonals? it would be great if they do, it would restore my faith in HTC and put the E200 back on my list of phones to recomend. later Owen
Guest shadamehr Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I have a question, it might be stupid but do the other (o2/qtek) builds do diagonals? Â it would be great if they do, it would restore my faith in HTC and put the E200 back on my list of phones to recomend. later Owen I thought it was flogged to death on here at the time it became known, that the consensus is that it is HARDWARE based - the physical switches and connections themselves. I'm sure that is what was said (???). If so, a million software/ROM updates aren't gonna help us there... I'm sure someone else will confirm or deny the hardware theory though again...
Guest mantrac Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 To quote Mr Orange, Heh... HAHA! Hihi... Yeah... right! That's early 3004, right mate? Just like with the SPV Backup Tool...
Guest XaCoSo Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Hi all! I'm from Spain, and I've got my Qtek 8080 with the ROM mentioned above, and yes, some of the problems that I have read here don't seem to appear on my device... SIM free & Application free rules !!! :)
Guest edupin Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 And what about bluetooth with this ROM ? Does it work fine, better than on the SPVE200 ? Does bluetooth modem dial-up work with WM2003 PocketPCs ?
Guest lutzh Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 hi, i did some power consumption measurements on the orange, qtek and o2-rom: there's no difference to mention at all. they are all around 52 mA when running with SD card in, so no hope for a fix of the sd card controller at the moment. if interested i can post the single numbers for every tested rom here tonight. i am very couriouse to see what happens in the 1.9 rom. i've heard terrible roumors regarding it. i'll come back when its verifyed but if its veryfied i'll definitly loose the last hope & trust in htc and its products and will end my living-beta-tester-life with their stuff... cheers, lutz something personal about all this - off topic but i need to let it out. dont waste your time reading it... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------you know what - of course its possible to sell this kind of devices to guys like me. i have no problem to be a early adopter and to live with the problems that accoure then. but i cant really understand how a device like the e200/qtek 8080/o2 xphone/i-mate smartphone2 can make it to the shops. specs say battery will last up to 100 hours. i am asking myself how someone can eat this from htc. i guess the e200 doesnt get near to 100 hrs, not even in airplane mode. in reality it does make it 2 days if you are happy enough to have another phone that you can use while your e200 lays down draining battery by just being on. where's qualtity management? where's the person that had the pre release in its pocket and found that out? did a beta tester ever use the e200 to see that it - once you use it with the options it offers - the battery says good night after 24 hrs? this is the part that i am very unhappy about. you know when bmw offers a new car model its testet for its fuel consumption. then they print the average fuel consumptions in their catalogues. if the car then fails this number by 25 % over the average you can bring the car back or get cash back. thats a law in germany and i guess in europe too. when did we find out about the sd card controller bug? somewhat around october. the latest rom releases that came with qtek and xphone are from december. how can you go on to sell a device that has a bug totally destroying the promised specs? this has nothing to do with thrustworthy computing at all. this is simply high jacking of money. and thats something i cant understand. but its my personal thought only.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
