Guest yoos Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 I would like to get your opinions... It's necessary to purchase some adapter for my car radio so i can play MP3's (it's an Eclipse radio), so I was thinking... instead of doing that, what about getting an iPod and then I can play that through my radio and also take it anywhere! What do you think? Should I get one or is there something that may work better for me in my car that also gives me the flexibility of mobility for anywhere else (besides a MS Smartphone) :) Also, does the ipod have a speaker so you can play it without headphones? If not, I saw there was a little adapter that can allow you to use the iPod as a voice recorder. That looks like it has a speaker, or maybe that's just the mic?? And.... if any of you use an iPod in your car currently: - The quality good? - How do you connect it? - How do you have it situated in your car (any pics)?
Guest benzo Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 I own the 15gig iPOD (new model). It's a beauty. The sound quality is excellent (I rip at 128kbps). I bought a little radio transmitter from maplin (=radio shack) that plugs into any audio jack and transmits on FM frequency. This allows the iPOD owner to listen to their music on any radio- minus the wires.
Guest [email protected] Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Check out the iPod mini, smaller, anodized aluminium, 4 Gb flash. Yummy
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 There is only one point to note about the iPod which is in general (I've heard) a brilliant device. It has a proprietry battery that if the battery dies and it's outside warranty will cost you a good US$200 to replace. What this means is if you plan to keep using this same iPod for more than 18 months/a couple of years there's a good chance the battery will go tits up and that's the end of it... For price to features I am a bit of a fan of minidisc players and soon the next generation Hi-MD is coming out which will hold 1Gb on a disc (and allegedly the disc is useable for files too) which is an appealing little device :)
Guest Coucou Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Technically broadcasting from your iPod (or any device) on radio is illegal without a licence. It's legal to buy the transmitter but not to use it! A bit like it being legal to buy Cannabis seeds but not to grow them. I wouldn't worry about being caught though, I think they only enforce it if you're transmitting a mile or something. Just don't drive stoned :) Also the 4GB baby iPod isn't flash, it's a micro hard-drive.
Guest [email protected] Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Sorry, my bad. They're targeting flash market with the mini, I misunderstood.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 I like the Samsung Napster MP3 Player 30GB Cheaper than the ipod Plays WMA files as well as MP3s Has a built in FM Radio Built in FM Tuner Built in FM Recorder to MP3 ....and all that cheaper than the 30GB iPod alone without the extra Belkin accessories listed above. I've seen it in CompUSA & BestBuy for about $350. Makes more sense for the PC user. The Dell MP3 Play is also nice as well as the newest Nomad.

Guest sponge Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I bought a new car last May and was expecting it to come with a radio/cassette. I was going to use a tape adapter to listen to the music on my iPod. (It was a better option ,and cheaper, than paying for a multi-changer.) However, when I collected the car it had a single slot CD player! I looked into FM modulators, but they had been getting mixed reviews - bad sound quality, unreliable. The manufacturers audio unit didn't have auxiliary inputs so I decided to pull it out and replace it with a Clarion unit that did. I now have my iPod plugged directly into the head unit. Sound quality is spot on.
Guest Taoski Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 My matey has got a car stero that can play MP3s direct from CD - and the quality is excellent! QUite a few manufacturers make them now and even Halfords stock them.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 You inspired me to get an MP3 player. While looking at my options in the store...I went for the Napster. It was a toss-up between that and the Dell as I needed the ability to play WMA files as I have 150 albums already ripped to WMA. Correction from my above post...it is only 20GB at US$329.00 But it also has: FM Radio Ability to record MP3s from the radio FM Transmitter which works great in my car but I believe its mono not stereo. Line-In ability to record other media Remote Control (wired) All-in-all....NICE!
