Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 google for "spybot search and destroy" too. By the way, XP SP2 adds a built in popup stopper to ?IE6, and it works!
Guest kelv23 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 tried them all but its still there.its not an ad pop up,it comes as a security warning then goes to a download.i cant get in touch with the company who it comes from as theres no contact info just the co. name NGD systems, google doesnt throw anything of use up on a search either
Guest Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Any chance of a screen grab? Nothing fancy, a "Prt Sc" jobby would do. It might make it easier for someone to recognise (ie; is it Messenger spam, or a genuine OS dialog, or hijacked homepage pop-up, etc). I suspect it might be one of two things: Either spam using the Messenger service - looks like a system dialog but is a message sent from a Evil Spam Lord (and appoligies to all other types of Evil Lords - spam merchants give you a bad name!). Or, it might be a "hijacked homepage" type of thing; if it's this then I'm surprised that AdAware etc didn't notice it.
Guest Taoski Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Also check the "Downloaded Program Files" folder for any odd looking stuff. This is where alot of ActiveX stuff gets installed to. Just delete anything in there that looks odd. If ad-aware did'nt spot it then it could be a something really clever. I have seen something like this before on my mates XP PC - he had to use the System Restore in the end to get past it. Never found out what it was. Although to me it sounds like an attempt to install something from a website (Gator or something like that). Change your homepage in Internet Explorer to see if this makes any difference - and pick something out of the ordinary - just in case there is an ammended HOSTS file on your PC redirecting traffic to another site.

If your using XP, try this. Go to Start and then Run and type in sevices.msc. Scroll down until you find Messenger, double-click on it and change the Startup type to Disabled. Just to make sure, also click on the Stop button. This should stop them. Note: This will NOT in any way shape or form stop MSN Messenger from working (The chat program in XP). Nor will it kill any other 'chat' program. All it does is stop a network service MS thought would be useful, but people are now using to push there wares.
