Guest casper508 Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 I'm looking to uprgade my graphics card and the these two fall inside my price range. I've read about both of em but cant seem to make up my mind. Apparently Radeon doesnt support DirectX 9 so what will be the future specially with games like NFS underground and others? I can get both of them for almost identical price of £75-80 inc pnp. So what do you guys recommend? Ta Cas
Guest ClintEastman Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 As far as i know the 5200 crumples under the strain of Pixel Shader 2.0. So you could say that the FX doesn't do DX9 ether... Not much help i know... Personly i went for a 9600Pro, only £100ish.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 No point in shelling out extra 256meg mem either really. I'd be inclined to go for the rad, purely because they are both low end cards and i have a slight ati bias
Guest casper508 Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 No point in shelling out extra 256meg mem either really. Even if the PC is used extensively for high-end Photoshop and CAD work? Wont having more RAM on the card have any affect?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I can't say i'm 100% sure with PS and CAD, i think you'll probably get bottlenecks elsewhere in your system (unless its kickarse) before the gfx mem is maxed out though, especially with lower end cards like these that have slower memory and gpu clocks. This is certainly true where gaming is concerned. I'm not an expert though, my advice would be to dig out some reviews of the two cards from sites like www.tomshardware.com, www.anandtech.com and www.hardocp.com to name a few. Again though, bear in mind most reviews will have a slight gaming bias.
Guest ClintEastman Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 If you are getting a 9600 PRO (like you said in the other thread) DON'T get a 256MB card. The tend to be lower quality(to keep costs down), thus run at lower clock rates. But always check a good review!
Guest James Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 have a look at this baby:- its wath i have got and use it with AutoDesk inventor series:- http://www.nvidia.com/page/fx_5600.html
Guest casper508 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Looks like its gonna be 9600pro with 128mb DDR. I think i'll get this for the time being (cos my current Geforce MX400 is starting to crumble) and then replace it with a All In Wonder 9800 PRO. Turns out my cousin in canada knows someone who works at the ATI factory there so can get one real cheap sometime soon. Fingures crossed!! Cas
