Guest Will Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 Mr Orange announced the long awaited backup and restore tool is now available HERE Sorry about the delay. Well at least it's finally available. Will
Guest benwatt Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 I used it earlier this evening with near complete success. If like me, your restore finishes with a message saying there are warnings, take a look at the SDUTLog.txt file in the folder you put the backup tool. In my case it showed that none of the folders it backed up could be placed back in the IPSMWindowsAppMgr folder. I ended up doing this by copying them onto the storage card and using Smart Explorer to copy them over (which initially failed, but worked after another reboot). My SDUTLog.txt file also told me that the files email.xml, Outbox.dump, DeletedItems.dump and SentItems.dump had failed to be copied back to the device and that the restore email had failed. These files didn't actually seem to have been created in the backup hence why they weren't copying back, but there doesn't seem to have been any problems as a result (possibly due to me syncing the email anyway). Other than that, I'm very pleased with the whole thing, it's nice to finally have the update on my phone and have kept my messages and apps installed, and it's also very useful to have a reliable method of backing up the data on my phone in the future :) If only it had come a month ago
Guest Gorskar Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 Well I've been waiting for this tool for some time, and I'm happy to report a complete success! Backed up old 1.5 ROM, ran 1.6 update, restored backup. Everything back to the way it was with the new ROM version. Excellent! Only hickup was that it didnt display all the menu items imediately, but after a minute or two they appeared. (didnt even need to reboot the phone again!) Nice one! Now I just need to unlock my phone again...
Guest smeg36 Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Now, for the compatability question. Does this backup/restore utility only work for the SPV/E100? It says on the site that the ROM Update process is only for those two, but is doesn't say if the backup/restore will work for other phones (MPx200 in my case). Anyone want to try it out?
Guest markdotpeters5 Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Indeed. I spent ages rebuilding my phone a few days ago, so don't really feel like trashing it again! Anyone feeling brave? :)
Guest markd66 Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Ah well :D It started well enough - the backup/restore tool backed up my E100 without a problem. Even warned me that my homescreen had been replaced with the MS default one, but that my original would be replaced when I restored (FWIW my homescreen is customised, but just minor tweaks to the MS default screen, nothing fancy :) ). So far, so good. Ran the ROM update, no problem. Ran the restore, which ended with warnings (but this time no clues as to what those warnings were). Looked in SDUTLog.txt - like benwatt the whole of IPSM/Windows/AppMgr was in error, plus the email files. Not too worried about the latter at this stage, most of the former looked like tmp files (plus a DLL for Smartphonenotes) so not too troubled about that either. The phone, however, was in a bit of a mess. In summary, the following things broke (e.g. were not put back by the restore) - Reg tweaks gone: MRU reset to default, Phone name reset to Smartphone, icons reset to Orange defaults, probably more. - Programs menu was a mix of default items, the new stuff and my changes - Tasks all gone (but calendar and contacts intact) - Smartphonenotes broken due to a missing DLL in AppMgr - App lock gone (I expected this) Now, here's the twist. Although the phone had renamed itself back to Smartphone, the CE Services Partner ID never changed. So, whilst it resynced itself automatically (which happened a couple of times during the restore) it was happily duplicating all my contacts and calendar entries (same session, different device name so must be new data) I couldn't write anything back to AppMgr until I removed the app lock. On the offchance I reran the restore again once the app lock was off, but it didn't fix anything (although I didn't get the AppMgr errors logged in SDUTLog.txt this time, Smartphonenotes was still bust) and all the other stuff was still missing. Looking very quickly at the backup files, some of the reg entries are clearly default values and not copies of what I had. So I'm less than impressed. Fortunately I'm not daft enough to not have a backup but that's probably not the point. I'm particularly annoyed about the tasks going AWOL. Ho hum Mark.
Guest benwatt Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Yeah, I only just noticed that my current Tasks had all gone a few minutes ago. All old tasks are still in Outlook because my SPV isn't interested in them, but all the current ones are gone which is rather annoying. The Programs menu issue you talk about isn't a major one, I was kind of expecting something along these lines and it doesn't take long to sort. On the subject of files not being placed back in AppMgr, it is worth doing as it seems that not having those files back will cause problems with Adding or removing applications later on. Other than the Tasks issue, the only other problem I'm having is with Traffic Counter SPE which needed reinstalled and reactivated, but then when I restarted my phone it asked to be reactivated again, and seems to be staying unactivated now. I'll try a manual activate tomorrow and see if that sorts the problem.
Guest ihoncen Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 will the latest 1.6.x.x version update work in the United States on a SPV currently using the 1.1.6.0 ROM version? thank you
Guest daveni Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I updated my phone the other day after backing up using the French tool (assume UK one is the same from the posts here apart from the language difference?) - posted it here a few days back: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=101830 Since, I have *had* to rebuild my phone from scratch due to unreliability, unable to launch majority of programs etc. After redoing the update from scratch without restoring, I'm now quite happy with it - glad I did my own backup of my data before using the tool by copy/pasting from ISPM etc. to my PC otherwise I would have been v.naffed off indeed.. After all this time, you'd think the backup would have been tested fully - and only released when it actually works! Ah well, its OK now (after a few hours of work) but I dread to think how newbies will get on with this backup and how Orange will sort it out when they ring into c/services!!! Cheers Dave
Guest peekie Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 my only question for mr orange is will the restore tool work also with the E200 when the update comes ( could be why it took so long to be posted??? ) but better late than never shame as i lost my serial number to the fonix voice dial and fonix refuse to let me know what it si even with proof ive bought the prog
Guest ghozd Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Does it bakup and restore SMS , MMS and E-mails??
Guest kingronnie Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Sounds like everyone else is having a pretty successful time, but not me! It seemed to backup okay, then update okay, but now the restore option doesn't run at all and my phone is back to standard. I wish I hadn't bothered. I've got to spend the weekend rebuilding my phone now. Thanks a lot Orange! :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Backed up my bosses' phone, updated, restored, and now all his contacts are gone! DOH! :) P

Guest Spaceman Spiff Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 :) I've also had problems with the backup/restore program. Smartphone notes now doesn't work and it screwed up my Activesync settings. Also the 1.6 upgrade means I can't now edit the 'normal' profile to set volumes etc. Pretty poor show really! The restore stopped for well over an hour on restoring the Inbox. I stopped the restore and decided to re-sync. Have now upgraded again and will rebuild phone with all apps from scratch! Also, battery life (original SPV) now seems to be WORSE!! Used half a battery overnight with 'Aeroplane on' (was 'Radio Off'. Richard
Guest snowgoon Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Ohhh finally. Downloaded it. Ran Backup. Success!! Upgraded. Success!! Ran Restore. Er... Ran Restore again... hang on nothing's happening... no message, nothing.. WTF? Hmm a log file.. ohh it says "Failed to create profile path". Great. No restore. I'd rather have waited another month to get this so they could've tested it more. If the application can write an error to the log file which (from my understanding) means that the profile won't be there to restore, then surely the restore tool needs to know that information and presumably it would be handy for me to know too.. BEFORE running the upgrade. Bravo, bravo.
Guest revmoola Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 It's definitely not a good idea to run a French backup tool on an English ROM or vice versa. Always use the matching tool for the language ROM on your phone.
Guest revmoola Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 It's also worth turning the phone off and then back on _before_ doing a backup and _after_ the restore is complete.
Guest detailmeister Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I tried it and have had similar success and failures... The backup worked ok, the restore not so good. I noticed it mucking about during active sync, i.e syncing every contact again (hmm) but all of my contacts are still there, except it had added some Orange ones (I knew they were new as I had tweaked mine with a category set to Orange). Yep, the tasks dissappeared, but in Outlook they had been moved to deleted items, so I just moved them back into the tasks folder and resynchronised. The Start Menu was completely screwed up, a mix of old and new so I spent a while reconfiguring that (and BTW you'll lose all your speed dials - which I use extensively - Smart Explorer = SE = 73 on the phone keyboard, etc etc) My Homescreen was changed to default then changed back but no longer works correctly... Will look into that, maybe missing the alarm plugin? What I should have done is use CECOPY, but I still haven't quite got the hang of the syntax for that. Any ideas beyond the helpfile? All in all happy with the new found responsiveness of the phone though. Detailmeister
Guest markd66 Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Cannot use or edit the Silent profile, lost Fizz monitor, changed all the Calender details, windows media is a bit jumpy. Anyone got any advice for the inexperienced. I'm beginning to think the only answer is to forget the backup and start again? My profiles got messed up as well - put the phone into the car kit this morning and it stayed on Normal. Later I put it into Silent and then couldn't get it back out again  I deleted the modified profiles in IPSMApplication DataProfiles (default profiles are not stored there) and that sorted that one out. Clearly the backup tool is using the normal copy routines and hence is struggling with open files/objects when the OS is running. Every time I run it, different things fail to get copied. I should have guessed something was up when I noticed that the backup utility was using ActiveSync  I think I'll be hard-resetting mine and starting again. (In fact I'll back it up *properly*, hard reset and then boot off my 1.5 backup SD and see if it sorts itself out - I did this for 1.3.7 to 1.5 and it didn't seem to cause any problems - and then start from scratch if I need to) Cheers, Mark.
Guest Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 My SPV went through the entire procedure fine, and although the log says email restoration failed, my emails are still on the phone. Only other issue is that the phone has been app locked, so you'll have to decertify again if you've got unsigned apps running. Not sure what new benefits the update has done tho - still get eggtimer and "No service" message.
Guest anselm Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Logged on particularly to ask how to use the Back up software - doesn't come with any docs, the exe just unpacks to a folder. No idea if you run it cold from PC or have to install files on the SPV? Having read through the thread I'm not sure I want to bother, seem like every one has had trouble with the utility. Anyone manage to get it to work properly?
Guest markd66 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 You've got to ask yourself one question... Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya? (sorry, couldn't resist  ) Cheers, Mark.
