Guest smeg36 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 I don't know if someone has already reported this, but I haven't seen it anywhere, so I thought I would let you guys know. I just got my new issue of Pocket PC magazine, and in it they said that Thunderhawk, who has a browser for Pocket PC's, is coming out with a Smartphone version. The way the Thunderhawk browser works, on the PPC anyway, is that they run the page through a server, which then converts parts of it to condense it, and optimize it for the smaller screen. The end result- a browser that gives you little to no side scrolling, even on non-mobile sites like ebay. The problem with this method is that you have to subscribe to their service, and pay a monthly fee to use it. With the PPC, they offered a one month trial, and I assume they are going to do the same with the Smartphone version.
Guest yoos Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Something like this? http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=90887&highlight=
Guest smeg36 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 It seems like a similar concept, but Thunderhawk gives you an actual browser, which is in landscape on the PPC so I assume it will be on the phone, but you never no because of the way the keypad is on a phone. Maybe it will be easily interchangable between landscape and portrait. Also, you are activly using their server for compression of every page you visit. I will be interested to see if it really makes that much of a difference though. I tried it, and ended up not liking it very much on my Axim, so we will see.
Guest [email protected] Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Smeg36: Could You subscribe alone? I thought Thunderhawk only made their service avaliable through ISP's. (GSM-carriers in our case)
Guest smeg36 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Yes, you can subscribe to only Thunderhawk. It uses whatever you current internet connection is, then the browser they include is directed to their server once you are online.
Guest James Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 sounds good.. any idea on price? Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest smeg36 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 For PPC's it is $49.95/year, or $5.95/month. They charge you for continued use since you are using their servers. It seems kind of odd paying a monthly price when all you see is the software, but I guess there is a lot more going on than just the software. Go to www.bitstream.com/wireless for info on the PPC browser. I imagine it will be pretty similar to that.
