Special Characters Screen colours

I'm customizing my colour scheme, but with one bit I'm kinda stuck.

It's the special characters screen which I can't get right.

I can't get the colours on this screen right, anyone got any idea what I can do about this?

If you want to change the white background of the chracters, I dont actually know if thats possible! Its always puzzled me.

its possible those symbols are actually pictures like jpeg or bmp, the default colour schemes have white backgrounds so you cant tell...so you wont be able the change them if thats the case...
