Guest InclininWirefree Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 :shock: Pls help me newbie find his way thru this wonderful world of handset OS customization...very taken away wit this one post on talking keypad...wonderful stuff! but i hve no idea how to proceed...all the talk abt registry editor and HKEY_CURRENT_USER sound latin...how can i proceed? i ve sum C, C++ experience and familiar wit unix/win basics...what tools shld i dwnload to begin wit? what will help me wit changing keypad tones on my Mio 8380? All advise will b greatly appreciated!

This Topic is a good one for getting started on customising your homescreen- all you really need for that is ActiveSync (to connect your phone to your computer), Notepad (to edit XML files) and some sort of graphics package to edit/create your images. Registry editing is a bit more in-depth, and there are usually alternative ways of achieving the same ends with cheap/free software. You'll need to download some software to edit the registry, such as PHM Registry Editor (which is pretty straightforward to use.) This Topic will get you started on the sort of things you can do through editing the registry.

P.S. PHM Registry Editor (http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/) provides the version of the software tuned for a PocketPC...Wud it work for my Smartphone 2002 (on Mio 8380)?

(I have problems of my own with that, due to having a PC at work that I'm very restricted as to what I can install/download on, and a PC at home that isn't online, doesn't have a USB port and has a processor that runs at the same speed as my phone!) As for PHM- I don't think the PocketPC version would work, as I would guess it would be designed for touchscreen stylus operation- you'll find the Smartphone version (or at least a link to it) on www.monolithix.org (along with a whole load of other v. useful freeware- there should be Smart Explorer on there too, and a text editor is in the Orneta suite.)

Guest scott2eyes Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 I don't know what could be causing the problem- although if it happening on 2 different machines running 2 different operating systems then the problem must be one of the common factors. I doubt the software would be at fault (although you could alwways download ActiveSync from the Microsoft website to check), my guess would be that it's a problem with either the phone or the USB cable. :lol: Have you tried phoning your network's helpline to see if they can offer any advice?
Guest InclininWirefree Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 hey! managed to get the activesync work wit a lil' help from me friends... now... i got the file explorer on to the phone and am itching to get the keypad sound tweak going...for that I d/loaded PHMRegEdit...now i need one of them voice themes midnight refers to on in his tutorial on http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...?t=7695&start=0 the link for voice themes there (http://www.way2access.net/midnight/?page=vthemes) results in a 404!...anywhere else i can grab a hold of these...what abt recording my own voice/sounds as peypad tones? all advise gr8ly appreciated as always!

The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have adequate system permissions. Please contact your service provider for more information" ...i received the same error earlier once when i tried d/loading SmartExplorer over GPRS...however, that is not to say that i 've not been able to install anything on the phone...recently installed IA Style's file explorer... :D wud appreciate some advise here!

Sounds like you need to application unlock your phone (Orange put a lock on their phones to stop people putting unlicenced software that they don't know about on- I don't know whether this is in your interests to protect you from poorly written software or in their own interests to get a cut of the software you pay for...) Check This thread for details of how to unlock your phone (although I would strongly reccomend backing up anything you don't want to lose first.)

Guest InclininWirefree Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 gave it a shot...a slow & steady one at that...following is the procedure I followed and the results: - d/loaded 'Alphaflux Unlock.zip' from alphaflux's post - sync'ed up the Mio - copied the file into IPSM/Windows/Start Menu - It promptly appeared in the Programs menu - I clicked on it Results: - "Installation failed. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have adequate system permissions. Please contact your service provider for more information" what?!?!?!?...Now I don't even see it in my Programs menu...pls advise.

I have an MPX200 and this is the file I used to free my phone from the shackles of the Orange oppressor :wink: Just copy it to a folder on your phone, Games for example, go to that folder and click it!!!Alphaflux Unlock.CAB
Guest InclininWirefree Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 same result w/ ur file too MPXtricky...i copied it to Start Menu...on the phone i see it just below the ActiveSync icon...clicking on it begins installation...finally ending up with the same error! two things... 1) when u say 'click it', u mean on the phone right coz double clicking on it on my pc after i copy it to IPSM/Windows/Start Menu doesn't work...it simply shows the General Properties tab w/ file size, etc 2) Right clicking the file i downloaded from ur link shows the file as a .zip file within which is an .xml file...but in the file explorer on my phone, the same file when copied shows up as a .cab file...any concerns there? jst shooting arrows in the dark...I wanna get this going fwd :oops:
Guest mpx200-spv_user Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 :roll: Bit off topic sorry The best firewall and antivirus i have found is mcafee for using with smartphones. works well for me i had the new w32.novarg.a@mm virus on my phone and it found and got rid of it. The prob we have is no av on smartphones that i know of that is. now going to mail when i sync its safer! Got the removal tool if any you guys need it! PM or mail me johnnyboy :twisted:
