Did anybody notice that when you press 911 (112 in holland) when the keypad is locked.. the phone tells you an Emergency number is dialed and you have to press The dial key to dial the number...

I have an e200 but i was wondering if this is on all smartphones ....

its really a good though that it works

yep all gsm phones will let you dial the Emergency services, its part of the spec

there was some discusion here about it a while ago, the main reason is: if your unable to make an emergency call, say in the case of a car crash, it means and random person can call the police/ambulance without having to work out how to unlock your phone

you have been able to do this for years, my old Nokia 3310 allowed me to do this

I actually accidently called 999 once, apparently this is a major problem for them, and if it happens too often you can be disconnected. So make sure nothing/nobody's pressing your buttons while you're not watching.

They are thinking of banning 999 from mobile phones because of this and only allowing 112 (the new emergency number)

False rumour mate.

As most GSM phones will let you dial 112 as well, while the keypad is locked, so it wouldn't make a jot of difference...

It would make quite a bit of difference...

Accidentally pressing 9 three times is dead easy if your non-flip phone is in your pocket and then when you sit down/hit your pocket against something/are felt up by a lady, it will dial the emergency operator. It's to combat the accidental, rather than the "I'll dial the police on my mate's phone", incidents that I think would be cut if 112 were the only number you could use.

Will never happen. Look at the fuss about changing 192, and imagine if you were making a call that really mattered...

Imagine the chaos if they did do it!

"You're now being connected to 112 118 - the new emergency hotline number. All of our operators are busy at the moment - please hold the line"

"Hello, 112 118 - the best emergency hotline number. Claire speaking, how may I help you today"

"My mates had a car crash"

"Which service do you require?"

"Ambulance"

"And which area are you in?"

"Central London"

"I'm sorry, we have no entries for "Ambulance" in the central London area in our database - how ever we do have "Emergency car repair". Just putting you through..."

"But my friends hurt..."

"The number you require is 020 7....."

as you hang-up in fustration, while being aware that you've just been charged over the odds for a useless service.

The statisticians out there will tell you that statistically, there is a greater likliehood of keying 999 to keying 112, but the difference is not as huge as you would think.

Nevertheless, as someone that too often has found the number "112" displayed on his screen before (though thankfully, no call actually made), then let me state from experience that for some reason, key placement or what I do not know, but 112 seems just as easy to auto-dial.

Aside from any of this, the point I was clearly making was that banning 999, and only allowing 112, is nothing but a false rumour, as it will still mean that false emergency calls would be mis-dialled, and never in a zillion million years would they BAN 999, and only allow 112, solely because of mobile phone mis-dails, if it did not fully rule out the possiblilty of future mis-dialled calls anyhow...

Cheers mate.

hey you can even dial the emergency number even without the sim card installed. ( now why would anyone bring a mobile without a sim. hmmmm)

Some phones also dialled emergency numbers if you just mashed the keypad for a certain amount of time. Obviously with all the candybar phones living in pockets this practice has been stopped....

Unsurprisingly, the auto-unlock feature does not work with international rescue numbers.

if you install the CAB, what happens if you are really in an emergency and couldnt fumble w/ the keylock?

Posted

You're screwed. That's why I'm not going to install it. If I haven't used my phone for an hour I'd have to put in a password first, that's ten keypresses before i've dialed. What's the chances of getting that right if i've just been assaulted?

Has no-one noticed the other emergency number you can dial... it's been there all along as I've tried it on a few Nokias... it's a simple '08' where in the world is this one for? It's very easy to press if you ask me, go on give it a try, just don't press CALL

'08'? hey, has anyone tried dialing '611' w/ keylock on in the US with ATT plan? does it work?

Guest bosshogg

I think 08 is the emergency number in Mexico or something...

Something I've noticed is if your sim password contains one of the emergency numbers (like 08) then it appears in plain text in the sim password entry box!

the "08)" in the above message should be "08"...doh...

note. in case of emergency..... remove sim and call EMS ( duh )
