Icon desktop: simple or impossible thing to do?

I'm rather new to smartphones. I've learned something about customizing homescreens.

Now it's very natural for me to think about putting some icons/links on the homescreen free space to call some most used fixed applications. (Not the MRU list, I'd like to choose which application must stay on the homescreen). But it seems like it's a very hard job to do.

It seems there is no standard plug-ins to do that.

I've found that maybe on Orange phones there is the

plugin clsid="{A1536C57-6AC2-4c31-9542-B144B0E9D076}"

that should make it, but it doesn't work on my mpx200 (I've searched that clsid code with regedit in my phone but it's missing, so maybe there's some installation needed...)

I can't believe some such simple thing can't be done on the mpx200!

Another thing: is it possible to create a link pointing to the outbox folder? As far as I know it's only possible to link to the inbox message folder....

Any help much appreciated!

I'm not entriely sure about the mpx200 - but the shortcut plugin is an Orange specific plguin, ie it is only shipped with Orange phones.

If your phone isn't orange, I think you would need to install an Orange ROM to get the shortcut plugin. After doing that, its pretty simple to apply icons to the homescreen. See this thread -

here.

Thanks drblow!

You confirm something that I came to suspect (after a lot of research).

There must be some dll that does the job. It's installed on Orange phones, but it's not a smartphone 2002 default. So it's not present in "not-Orange" phones. (Its name must be Orangeh.dll)

Best thing would be if some programmer could provide something similar, some dll that can offer the same functionality for all mpx200 not-orange users.

But maybe that's asking too much....

i just realized something that might work to your advantage... open up the at&t default homescreen xml file. If you've ever noticed...the icons on that homescreen do not change...they are stationary. look at this code...

If im not mistakin...you can put your own .lnk files in the same folder as the xml file.

Thanks

I've none of those two CLSID in my registry.

The Mpx200 I have is not Orange and not AT&T. I bought it (here in Italy) as a bare phone with just motorola defaults (and ms os of course).

I really think only solution for us would be some programmer good will.

For example FrankieG alarm plugin installed a cusotm new dll and it's CLSID reference and it works.

You know it shouldn't be such an bad idea if somebody wrote an "Desktop" plugin which would read shortcuts from a certain directory and you could be able to select them or so

Well, with the new generic plugin here & my new homescreen here the impossible may just have been done!
