Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 Depending on where you are in the world will depend on the phone and support you may expect to get. The Mio is not generally available outside of Asia so if you are in the UK or US then the MPX would be the better choice.
Guest spid3r Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 Hi i live in u.k i am going to buy the phone from ebay after a friend told me comon ppl??
Guest kristianmatthews Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 interesting that this should come up. my friend also has the same dilemma. the mpx200 is cheaper the mpx200 is better looking (imo) the 8380 has the camera the 8380 probably has better reception due to the aerial (the mpx200 reception is pretty poor) so i guess it boils down to function over form...?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 the 8380 probably has better reception due to the aerial Nope not true it's down to the way the radio stack has been written. If you are in the Uk then there is no real support for the Mio here so if you had hardware problems you could be looking at nice paperweight. If you want a camera wait for the MPX220 but that is not supposed to be released until April.
Guest kristianmatthews Posted January 24, 2004 Report Posted January 24, 2004 does this mean its possible to rewrite the radio stack and improve the reception without changing the hardware?
Guest FuNKySoULyBrO Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I'm using the mio 8380. I was deciding betw mio 8380 n mpx200, and finally chose the 8380. Why, not really because of the camera, but rather the processor. It has an xscale 200mhz cpu, whereas the mpx200 has a TI omap 132mhz processor. I'm disappointed in the TI omap processor because I had a jornada wda 928 ppc phone which uses this same processor, and i can tell tat it's definitely slower than even a strongarm 206mhz( jornada 568, which I also had ). Moreover, it suxs battery juices real damn fast too. Up til now, this mio haven't disappoint me yet. I had even updated it with the latest 55 rom that is suppose to improve speed, stability and the msn bug. So in summary, i'll list out the adv/disadv btw the mio and moto imo CPU === Mio(Xscale 200mhz) wins the moto (TI omap 132mhz) RAM === Moto wins with 32mb ram vs 16mb mio ( For my case, dun really matter as I had a 512mb sd card for storage ) Size === Moto wins with slightly smaller size and no antenna. ( For me, I didn't really mind the size as my pocket is definitely big enuff for the mio, though not big enuff for my ppc phone j928, aka known as the "brick" haha. Moreover, there's a german website tat sells a 3mm long antenna for the mio too! ) Radio Reception ========== No comments here cuz I never tried mpx200 b4. Extras ==== Mio wins with the builtin camera. Though the quality is not tat great, i still like the fact tat it can record avi videos( length being as long as ur sd card can hold, which my 512mb sd had aplenty  )
