Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Hello All: I'm contemplating getting the ATT MPX200. But before I do I'm wondering how the reception is. I have not had any good experience with GSM service under TMobile in the South Jersey Area. Well, actually, the main problem was indoors. How is service in your area and indoors? Also, I'm confused about ATT Data Services. What is their data service called and what are their plans? I pnlu see mMode which seems like WAP. Am I wrong? Nick
Guest rh0926 Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 encece: I have an MPx200 with AT & T in Columbus Ohio. The reception is very poor here and many time I have to go outside to continue a call. I used to have a SprintPCS phone and it worked fine deep inside the buidings at work and here at home. I'm waiting to see what happens with AT & T. Cingular, Nextel and a Japanese company are looking to buy AT & T, so if that happens, I'm sure I can look forward to more towers and better reception. Either that, or wait 9 more months and unlock the MPx200 and switch to T-Mobile. It'd be nice to have that unlimited data plan, so I can really show off the phone!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I had T-Mobile and it was great everywhere but in my home, where I had to walk outside to make a call and leave the phone on a window to receive calls. I need it to work here as I've reduced my landline to almost nothing and forward all calls to my mobile. I dont know if ATT and TMobile share the same network towers. I guess I need to find someone with ATT and see if their phone works any better in my home before I make the switch. I currently have Verizon and you cant beat their reception. But their limitation of phones is driving me nuts. I had and hated the i600. And I dont think they'll have anything better anytime soon seeing how long it takes them to introduce new phones. The flexibility of GSM is what I need. I'm hoping I can find a provider that suits those needs.
Guest rh0926 Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Same here. I had Sprint and loved the coverage but hated the phones. Seems they don't offer a PDA/Phone combo for less than $400. I previously had a Kyocera Palm Smartphone, but it went out and Sprint couldn't offer any new phones that had the capabilities I needed.
Guest actionj Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I used to have AT&T TDMA and the reception was wonderful but now I have AT&T GSM and it has well documented "building penetration problems" meaning that outside reception is pretty good, but anytime you are inside buildings, stores, etc, the reception becomes very poor. Once the MPX220 comes out it will have an external antenna and support tri-band including the 850 GSM band that will give you better Building penetration.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 I checked different friends phones in my home. T-Mobile still stinks on all GSM frequencies Cingular only offers 850 in my area so they're out. ATT (to my surprise) WINS. Good reception all throughout my home!! My friend had a siemens phone that is TDMA and GSM. I turned off the TDMA to be GSM only and it worked like a champ. ATT...here I come! I already purchased a e200 that I'm 90% sure (hopefully) I can get unlocked with the original owner & Orange. If I cant for some reason Then I am buying the MPx200 from Amazon for $69.00 and will sell it when I can use the e200.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted February 7, 2004 Report Posted February 7, 2004 As a follow-up.... ATT gave me the MPx200 for the Amazon price and the reception is awesome in my home!
Guest equis Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 How the heck did you get the Amazon price through ATT!? I tried that and they said no. In my area ATT just sucks in doors everywhere, I even stand in front of a some steps leading into a house and I lose the signal immediately.!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 I asked, they said no. Then they asked which plan I wanted. I got the $59.99 national plan and they said okay. I cant explain why ATT works in my home...TMobile doesnt at all, but full strength on ATT. Also.... Night-Quil (the cold medicine that is supposed to make you sleep) gives me the jitters and keeps me awake while Day-Quil puts me right to sleep.
Guest phonesmarts Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 AT&T has decent reception where in my house (CA)... and much better reception outside. T-Mobile (I don't have a T-mobile SIM) has OK reception from what my friends say. but their calls are dropped sometimes... I never really had a drop from ATT
