Windows Media Encoder - volume very low on SPV

I have been encoding movies using Windows Media Encoder, the movies are perfectly watchable however the volume is REALLY low in media player on my SPV - in the encoder itself there is a volume control on the left but its kind of greyed out so I cant adjust it. Anyone managed to get round this?
