Ok this is how it works starting from the top, based on the spv (different phones implement t9 slightly differently)

1) I'm assuming you know how to get a new message open and put the cursor into the typing area?

2) Mode of Input.

At the top right of the screen, you should see an icon next to the signal icon. When you first enter the text area this should say "T9", this indicates that the intial letter will be a capital but that subsequent letters will be lower case. To alter the input method you press the * button, this will toggle the icon to T9 (Caps Lock) and then t9 (lower case). After you type the first letter in T9 mode it will automatically change to t9. If you press and hold the * button you will first see "123" which means numerical input, press and hold again and you will see "abc", this is text input with the t9 dictionary off. The Caps lock can be toggled for abc mode exactly the same as for t9 mode.

3) Using t9.

The t9 dictionary tries to predict what you are going to write. You should only press the key corresponding to the letter you want once and then move on to the next letter. The letters are written on the keys to guide you. For example, to type "Hello" press H=4, e=3, l=5, l=5, o=6. One keypress for each letter. Quite often you will find that t9 guesses the wrong word, this is because with three or four letters per key there are several possible words. If you try typing "stick" for example (7,8,4,2,5) you will find "quick" displayed. If you press the 0 button you will find that "stick" appears, 0 cycles through all the available possibilities when the word you have just written is underlined. For example I have a mate called Gaz, to type his name I have to cycle through five possible words first. Try it. Obviously not all words are in the t9 dictionary so if you've cycled through the options and the word you want doesn't appear then use the "abc" mode to type the word out and the phone will then remember it the next time you try - unfortunately the spv doesn't do this particular part very well as you will find if you do a search on t9 memory loss. If you don't want to change to abc mode you can insert individual letters in t9 by pressing the relevant key, changing the letter shown by using 0, then press right on your direction pad. This should remove the underline from the letter then you can type in the next letter without your phone messing it up for you.

To insert a space press the # key. To insert punctuation press 1, and toggle with 0. In normal operation the spv recognises a full stop (the first symbol to appear when pressing 1) and makes the next letter a capital. It also works out when you might want an apostrophe, so once I've typed "Gaz", I can type "Gaz's" by simply pressing 1 then 7. Extra symbols like £ or () can be accessed by pressing and holding #.

4) Using abc mode.

This is a lot more simple than t9, it's not as fast but it doesn't take as much getting used to. Simply put pressing each key cycles through whichever letters are shown on it. For example to obtain "a" press 1 once, for "b" press it twice, for "c" press it three times. This can result in a lot more key-presses for each word which is why it's slower than t9, but it does what you expect it to which is why some people prefer it.

I think that's a fairly comprehensive guide, if you're unsure of anything let me know! But try it out first, it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. You don't say which phone you're using so be aware that the functions of the 1, *, 0 and # buttons can vary between phones, as well as other differences in implementation, but playing with it for a while normally gets you used to it.

A couple of other basic functions I forgot, to delete press the back arrow under the red phone ("C" on some phones) and to insert a carriage return (new line) press the enter key. That's particularly good for e-mail.

You'd have to ask someone a bit more technical than me I'm afraid. I believe you can change the rom version, and you should be able to find various links to upgrades on this forum. I can't advise on which one would be best for you and I don't take any responsibility if you screw up your phone. I'm currently using the Orange 1.6 rom which works ok, but I'm in England on Orange. Have a look in the device specific forum and software applications.
