Guest kelv23 Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Got a major prob on my comp, last night a/sync started playing up,went through troubleshooter but no joy so as a last resort I uninstalled it.Problem is when i tried to install from CD,i get the runfile from current location so i press the open button and get nothing,no install icons or anything. Ran adaware and found loads of spykeys etc and got rid of them,as i'm on a tight budget i've been using the free AVG anti-virus system but something has got a hold of my comp and is causing loads of problems, theres a trojan program in there somewhere and has probably done some damage.I really need some help and advice as to how to sort it out if it can be done and some solid advice on how to avoid this in the future. Is there a best solution to this or am I going to have to buy a new comp to get rid of it? i hope someone can help as i'm getting pretty much to the end of my patience, cheers
Guest Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Don't buy a new computer! There are very few things that aren't fixable in some way or another, and most of those are hardware related. Worst comes to the worst you can always do a fresh re-install of your OS - but that is only as a last resort. Running AdAware is a good start - it might also be worth trying Spybot S&D (from http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1>Download.com) to see if it picks up anything that AdAware has missed. A word to the wise- Spybot S&D can show up stuff that is legit - if in doubt don't remove the item; http://www.google.com>Google it to see if it's needed or not. It's possible that AdAware also removed some items that were not spyware - which could be why you are still having problems. It's probably worth researching specific error messages that you get - that may narrow down what is the root of your problem. Put the error number or program / DLL name into http://www.google.com>Google and see what comes up. For the future it's worth installing a firewall - personally I use http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown>ZoneAlarm; it's free and does the job (there are others though, BlackIce, etc). This way if a trojan does get into your system you will be notified when it tries to access the internet - and then be able to do something about it. Once set up properly a firewall reduces the chance of you machine being used in a DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) attack against another machine. I haven't used AVG anti-virus so can't comment on it, but do make sure that it's virus definitions are up to date. Also note that some undesirable software (by their very nature) won't be picked up by virus scanners, despite the fact that they will be stealing your computer's processor cycles. That's why you need to have a AV program, a firewall of some description (even if it's only a router using NAT) and run an spyware tool every once in a while. Oh, and don't open any dodgy attachments, never install any software from the net that is unsolicited (Click now to install this amazing utility from Gator!), always look both ways before crossing the road and don't eat yellow snow. Hope that helps!

Guest morpheus2702 Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 If you are after some good antivirus stuff, Panda Software is a good site: http://www.pandasoftware.com
